That's a rather unusual request! Shocked

Well, the two things you need to get started is a Web Server to host your forum and then you must BUY the forum software and learn how to use it.

You can't start a forum like this one for FREE!
Having an IT specialist who's familiar with the software wouldn't hurt either.

I've seen a number of forums, started by kids with NO experience, fail within the first few weeks, just because of dumb mistakes and of course due to the lack of financial support. Running a forum like this one is NOT CHEAP!

Good Luck,

Actually, there are plenty of free and open source forum packages to use. This forum is based off of phpBB -- which is free.

http://www.phpbb.com/
http://www.simplemachines.org/
http://www.yabbforum.com/
http://getvanilla.com/

This is not even remotely an exhaustive list. The exact forum that you use will depend upon the web host that you select. You'll want to make sure that the host supports some type of database (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MSSQL, etc.) and access to scripting languages (PHP, Perl, ASP, etc.).

A high level step by step is actually quite simple:
1. Buy domain name
2. Buy host
3. Select forum software
4. Install/Configure
5. Build community

And if you want to GO the Really "free" route, try "freeforums.com".

They are good, but are "prone" to some down-time.
With a "paid" account, you can edit more of the site via php.

But HEY...... what do you expect for FREE!!!

The other think I'd recommend is also free - Keep your members informed, when you have to take the forum down for any maintenance/repairs or anything.

Your members are what makes or breaks a forum's success, so listen to 'em and keep 'em sweet - There's several forums that could do with learning this simple lesson Wink
