Most Internet service providers (ISPs) automatically provide an e-mail address, but that address gets clogged with spam as your address spreads.
Filling out Web forms often does this because many ask for an e-mail address. Ditto for product registrations, and some products require an address to register — and then the deluge of offers begins.
That’s where freebies as well as temporary e-mail addresses that expire after a few hours or days come in.
These are perfect for when you need to provide an e-mail address to download a program or receive free trial software.
Some of the temporary e-mail addresses are tied back to your regular e-mail address. These addresses will expire at a time you set, with any mail sent to that address being forwarded to you. (continued)
There some good suggestions in this article. I use a Firefox extension called Get jetable mail 0.4 which is a quick way to get a temporary email address which will forward emails to your real address for only a certain period of time. That way you can get registration/order confirmations, but not the mailouts & spam that follow subsequently.
