I need some help with my laptop
I have multiple indexer's AND/OR schedulars in my startup.
There are times my laptop will slow down to a crawl
My startup and shutdown is painfully slow.
My startup will set at the background for numerous minutes before taskbar and icons show up.
My shutdown at times will drop down to a blue screen and set there for a counted 10 minutes. |

Hello,
If you do not need to run all of these program each time the computer boots up, consider creating a folder off the Start Menu with a name like "Optional Startup" programs and move their shortcuts out of the "Startup" folder into it. When you need to run one, you can then launch it from the "Optional Startup" folder manually.

I need more information.
I removed something from my startup a short time back (thinking it was safe) only to have to reinstall the program because certain devices wouldn't work.
Don't want to do that twice. |

More than anything else I need to fix this shutdown issue. I have had to force my shutdown after 10 or more minutes each time.
That will drive ya crazy after three times. |

Hello,
Have you tried installing Microsoft's User Profile Hive Cleanup Service to see if that speeds up the shutdown?

| If that comes through automatic downloads, then I hope I got it. |

| Please don't take this the wrong way but it sounds to me like you need to do some "house cleaning". |

You might be right about that. I have been using Linux for so long that I forgot about some of the necessities that
Xp requires. I want to apologize for freaking out.
At some point it came to mind about defragging. after doing so my laptop shuts down in a timely manner. I need to make a monthly/weekly to-do list. |

Download CCleaner from ccleaner.com. Once installed, go to the TOOLS section. STARTUP gives you the option to disable an item in startup rather than delete it (and re-enable if needed) until you have a chance to test.
You might also consider which indexers you use. If you use both Microsoft and Google Desktop you are duplicating effort -- consider which is more valuable to you and disable or uninstall the other. |

I found my shutdown problem. It wasn't the defrag. I read in this forum where someone lost their usb controllers, and my laptop was suffering from intermittent usb problems. I didn't connect the usb with the shutdown, I was believing they were 2 separate problems. I unplugged my 4port hub and my printer, and did a number of restarts and shutdowns. Everything is working fine now.
(knock on wood)
Thanks for all responses....... |

The first step I take when working on a computer that I've never seen before is to click start, click RUN and in the run box type in, MSCONFIG.
When the window opens up on your screen, click the "Startup" tab in the upper tool bar. That gives you a list of all the stuff (mostly junk) that's loading and running when you boot up your PC.
Clicking on a box next to a program name, that has a check mark in it, will remove the check mark and that program will no longer start up on boot.
UN-Check any Monitors, Reminders, Schedulers, etc.
Obviously, un-checking any program does not stop it running immediately.
After making your changes, click "Apply" in the lower right corner of the window, before clicking OK and closing the window.
Then you have to re-boot your PC to see the results of your labors.
If you are confused by all the file names, post the list here and we can help you with what to disable and what to leave running. OK?
If, in error, you disable something necessary, it can always be RE-Selected again.
If you DE-Select "ctfmon" is will just come back again. It's not a virus but sure acts like one. I've written a little script to completely disable it.
It's one of those things that you really don't need running on your PC.
Getting rid of it, is a step in the right direction.
On most laptops, in that startup list, you'll have an entry that has "synaptics" or something similar in the name. That's the driver for your touch pad. Don't disable that one.
You don't need to install any special software to manage your PC. MS has already given you everything you need.
Disk Cleanup, found in the Programs>Accessories>System Tools folder can remove a lot of pure garbage from your PC.
I just wish I could sit at your keyboard for one hour.... I'd have that little PC running better than you ever thought possible.
Many defaults built into windows by MS, throttle performance down to a crawl.
It's like buying a new sports car, with a governor on it that limits it to 45mph.
Yes, it's much safer at that speed, but it's NOT what you paid for.
A common remark I get from new customers is:
"WOW! It didn't run that good when it was new! ".
I mainly use the options already built into windows by the programmers at MS.
Removing a bunch of JUNK, shutting down unneeded Services and doing a few registry tweaks can literally Double the performance of the average system.
Typically, my own PC boots up in about 20 sec's and shuts down in 5 to 8 sec's depending on what I've left running.
Sorry, I didn't mean to run on and on. That tendency comes with old age.
Merry Christmas!
The Doctor
PS: Every laptop should be running with all the ram that it will hold.
Taking the free scan at www.crucial.com will tell you what you already have, what your PC can take and tell you how much the ram will cost. You can even order the new ram right there with your credit card or debit card.
I perform this service for my customers all the time.
You'll find no better ram, at any price, anywhere, on this planet anyway, than what you can get from Crucial. They use only the very best ram, from "Micron". |
