Post subject: To install SP3 in Windows XP, or.....
|
|
|
There's so much chatter on the internet about XP's SP3 that I decided to give it a try. I know...... it's still in Beta testing.
But hey, with a new Ghost Image in the can, I can try anything.... right?
So after a half hour or more of cleaning, shutting down TSR's (programs that run in the background and may or may not ever show up in the system tray) and running Chkdsk and defrag, I was ready to give SP3 a chance to install itself.
I had downloaded the entire SP3 file while at a friends house today.
He has a much faster Internet connection than I do.
I was blown away at how fast the upgrade went. In just six minutes on my PC, the job was done. Nothing like the long time that SP2 took on most systems.
I now have the system back up and running with all my TSR's loading and running and in general I see no difference in how my system runs.
So at first glance, the SP3 upgrade was a NON-Event.
Ho Hum!.......
I'd like to know if anyone else has loaded SP3 and what they think of it.
Curious minds want to know,
The Doctor

| TSR's ?
I'm sure you meant "background tasks"
Otherwise, you're showing your age...

T.S.R. = Terminate but stay resident.
Yeah, programs that run hidden in the background.
I didn't realize that knowing computer terminology signified any particular age. Having knowledge is not age dependent.
So, have you tried SP3 yet or not? That was the question...... |

I haven't installed SP3 yet (or even DL'ed it yet ), but from what I've read elsewhere in other forums, folks have noticed a discernible speed up in Windows, and no-one seems to have reported any hassles - yet!!!
I think I'll wait 'til I see it on a PC mag's freebie disc though, at 1Mb /sec connection speed (with a good tailwind and rolling downhill), it'll take a month of Sundays to download. |

It's only 344 mb. So that would be 344 sec's. Right?
That's 5.733333333333 min's. I wish I had that kind of download speed.
I get only 64 mb/sec with my Satellite ISP and 3.4 kbps with my Dial Up.
So you see why I went to a friends house to download the file, via his high speed cable connection?
My PC was pretty well tweaked and tuned so I see no appreciable increase in speed or performance. Startup and shutdown still take the same time and programs open the same, so I don't know where folks are seeing a noticeable increase in speed.
I tried to have a fourth option in the poll, "I'm Afraid!", but it didn't show up in the poll. Forum gremlins at work again, I suppose.

I generally don't do Service Pack Betas.
I've been running Vista for about a month now -- I got new hardware for Christmas that makes it tolerable. I will probably go back to XP in the next couple weeks. I like it better, and some of my favorite programs haven't been "vista-fied" yet.. |

I set up a second HD for Vista and can just boot into it whenever I want.
I see NO advantages to Vista, but lots of incompatibilities and drawbacks.
It's a humongous resource hog and doesn't like most older hardware.
I give up a HD to it for just one reason and that's so I can learn how to set it up for my customers who are getting new PC's with Vista on them. I'm doing pretty well with that so far.

I would love to get that kind download speed. Point me in the right direction, Doc, I only get 6 mb/s with my cable.
Well I certainly messed up on this one. I'm now not sure what yours would be converted to, but mine was misstated and should have been 6 Mb/s. Sorry.
Also, to keep this on topic, I was the 2nd one to vote in the poll for using SP3.

I wish it was only 5 minutes . The file is 344MBytes and my speed is 1Mbits/second - big difference. Also, my connection has the usual clause - "speeds up to 1Mb/second"
I might well DL it, when I've finished downloading a load of old TV stuff I'm partway through getting, there should be more positive replies by then.

Just to keep this rolling along.....
My Wild Blue Satellite ISP offers me UP-TO 512 megabits per second download and 128 megabits upload speeds. This can and does vary.
If I pay more money, I can get higher speeds and more meg's per month.
To get Megabytes out of megabits, I have to divide the megabits by 8 to get Megabytes, so my 512 comes down to 64 Megabytes per second. NOT setting the world on fire, but a lot faster than my Dial Up connection that regularly gives me somewhere around 3 Kilobytes Per Second. (on a good day)
The good thing about the Dial Up connection, is that it still works during a thunder storm when the Satellite is OUT.
Back on topic:
I still see no improvements with SP3 and NO problems. It's been kind of a NON-Event. Nothing like SP2.

Hello,
I have done a little bit of testing with Microsoft Windows XP SP3, primarily for application compatibility testing. No problems noted.
I think a TSR is a program which remains resident in memory and running in the background after returning the command prompt to the user (which makes it a DOS-era construct), a background task is a non-resident program which is scheduled to periodically run by a task scheduler of some sort and a service is a process that can run automatically in the background without a user being logged in to the computer, much like a UNIX daemon. Of course, one can start (or stop) services while logged in as well (assuming sufficient privileges to do so). I think it is reasonable to think of TSRs as a kind of predecessor to services: Even though the mechanisms are not exactly the same, the desired functionality is, which makes them similar from the user's perspective.
When SP3 goes to manufacturing, I expect to install it on all the computers left that I have running Windows XP.

In my Belarc Advisor Current profile, under Installed Microsoft Hotfixes,
there is listed, in SP3, 138 hotfixes which, I suppose, is the bulk of XP's SP3. |

I've had a 'pre-release' SP3 for about a 8-10 days now (I can't remember which release it was ). It installed with no problems, just the customary reboot.
I couldn't quite tell whether there was a slight system speed-up or whether it was wishful thinking, I can rarely be bothered with 'bench-marking' etc. to find out exact numbers.
I DL'ed the 'MajorGeeks' latest version (5512 RTM) a day or 2 ago and installed that. Strangely, it took a lot longer to install, then on the reboot, the whole thing hung at the desktop - no icons, no taskbar, no HD activity, no nada!!!
After hitting the 'Reset' switch, it rebooted to the desktop, but came up with a load of errors relating to Win32 services and flashing CMD windows. Eventually, everything settled down and there it sat, waiting.
I decided to give it a final beating-to-death via another reboot and Voila!!! full reboot and ready to go, in about the same time as pre-update.
After a mixed and heavy workout, there's been no hangups (yet) or hiccups (yet). I'm still typing with crossed-fingers though, it's tricky but do-able |

Hello,
We started testing the version of Windows XP Service Pack 3 released on MSDN today in a few scenarios (reimaged back to factory ship state, updated with all applicable updates from Windows Update, anti-malware software installed, no anti-malware software installed and so forth) and so far no issues. Testing is ongoing, though, so it is always possible some issues will be found.
