Downloaded the Windows 7 beta. I'm somewhat impressed. (This is saying a lot for me since I haven't been impressed by much out of Microsoft since DOS 4.0. Anybody remember that abomination?)

It went on easier and quicker than any Windows install I have ever tried. Took about 30 minutes. Not only that, but it put itself on my home network pretty much without my help. Networking has always been a pain in my backside with Windows. I did have to download one Vista driver for the NIC card. After that no problems. I began to think I was installing Ubuntu it went so well.

So, was everything perfect and chocolate covered? No, my email chess program worked for a day and then got caught in an endless loop. It's working fine again this morning. But it is a beta after all.

What have the rest of you experienced with the beta? So far looks good to me.

Whenever I install a Beta of anything, I set it up as if it were going to be my Life-Long favorite.
Well, I did the Win-7 Beta install and then set about setting up my email on whatever would serve as "Outlook Express".

Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad I found NO email client. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad
I downloaded something from MS that was supposed to work, but it didn't.

That's all the longer Win-7 lasted on my PC. I won't be doing that again.
The only thing worse than a new MS-OS is a beta of a new MS-OS! Wink Laughing

However, I'm now testing Windows Vista Ultimate 64. It's by far the best OS I've tested since Windows 98se. Much faster than XP-Pro.

DOS 4.0? I remember it.....not very well.
But I loved DOS 6.22....... that was the nuts!

Cheers Mate!

I was reading on a paid newsletter today that quite a few items will be missing from Windows 7 (maybe in part to satisfy the EU which looks closely at MS as a monopoly with its bundling programs).
This was the headline Windows 7 moves Live Essentials to the cloud" and it was written by Woody Leonhard.

I guess if you google windows live essentials, you'll find what will be missing in windows 7.

Doc,
I also noted the lack of Outlook Express. I just downloaded Thunderbird and it works fine. The OS is quite unstable so far. If I leave it on for a couple of hours without doing anything the screen goes into hundreds of flashing oblongs and I have to remove power to even shut down. After leaving it off for 30 seconds to a minute it's alright again for a couple of hours.

They have a lot of work to do yet before it's ready for prime time.

Well stated!

Five years from now, we may all be running Win-7 and loving it, but right now, I have too many things on my plate to fuss around anymore with it.

I have to spend my time on the OS's that my customers are running, so I can properly support them with technical service. Win-7 isn't in the running.

I see more and more PC's coming out today with Vista 64 so that's where I'm concentrating my time these days.

As far as aftermarket email clients..... my customers don't use those and neither do I. I seem to remember trying "Thunderbird" once and at least for me, "It wet the bed". Likewise "Incredimail", MS Outlook, etc.
I've just never found any email client that is as easy to use and program as Outlook Express.

Oh well, to each his own. Eh?
