Help Please.....does anyone else have this problem...using Windows Live Hotmail as well as MSN Hotmail, emails with pictures having the i_safe.gif description are not displayed. Only a gray box where the picture should be. I can't seem to find an answer to this problem on my own and MSN isn't any help either. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

Apparently this happens to another person

Since the post I linked to says the email sent to other people shows the picture, it is probably some setting on your computer.

Check on the MSN site for Hotmail help and maybe you can find some setting that needs to be changed.

Strange.
This site has a couple of links to i_safe.gif - none work!
http://funlist.funpic.hu/?page=archive&message=15631&did=15046

This one has a link that does work:
http://media.photobucket.com/image/recent/correcaminos07/i_safe.gif?o=2

So, I don't believe it is a problem with an individual computer set-up.

micker377, all you have discovered is two people who uploaded a gif image to a free hosting site and they ironically named the gif image i_safe.

I could take any image from my computer, convert it into a gif and upload it to flickr with the name i_safe. The google search would now include the image that I uploaded.

Zlim...Bear with me please as I don't fully understand the i_safe.gif format. Apparently these are pics uploaded to a website and then emailed. What I don't understand is why I only get a gray box....no pic. I have no trouble viewing .gif format on my computer and no problem with any other format in my Hotmail email. Is it possible something is lost in the transfer or just some glich with Hotmail? I've looked all over and can't find any setting to change and no evidence of blocked images. Very frustrating indeed! Thanks for any info to help me understand this.

It is quite possible that the problems is NOT on your end but the OTHER.

Won't go into details, just yet, but been working on a very similar problem with double forwarded emails from a certain person to another (not me) - so far, it appears to be something the ORIGINATOR is doing, as if the email is recreated & the pics re-added, by the middle man, it will go OK.

(the middle man gets them OK but can't seem to send them without re-creating them & it is ONLY the ones from this one certain person)

I've never seen the problem, but then I never send a .gif either.

I always convert any picture, after I've g'shrunked it, to a .jpg type file.

That would be my only suggestion....."Never send .gif type files. Change them to .jpg type files."

I use PhotoFilter but any decent graphics program should be able to convert file types.

Cheers Mates!

Thanks for the feedback. This only happens when forwarded emails are sent to me....apparently circulating the web and forwarded multiple times. I know I've tried forwarding pics sent to me only to hear they did not come thru on the other end, but never knew why. So maybe sometimes I get them and can forward ok; other times receive, but can't forward and in some cases I fall into that "gray" area. Just depends on where I fall in that chain. It makes sense now that I know the process involved. I only originate pics in JPEG format but forwarded emails are generally not reformatted by anyone. I guess using an upload service, at some point, might cause this problem. I sure do appreciate everyone's input. Should you find an answer please keep me in mind.....Thanks again.

One thing I HAVE noticed is that at times people will send the LINK to those web pics (or to pics on there computers) instead of the actual pics . If for whatever reason, the pics links aren't available then the whole thing is screwed up. (usually gives message of not being available or some such wording)

Ever notice on this site at times the "smileys" (off site ones added by posters) or a picture will be missing & it will say something about not available? Basically, same thing.

LIKE THIS:

OR THIS:
Error: image could not be loaded. Image is not available from server

Image URL: http://ghostdogs.net/bb/images/hc_icons/404.gif

^^^^ I chose a known broken image link - hope it is still broken when you see this example ^^^^

Baby Tux....Broken image link displayed and I have seen your examples before. Just didn't know why. I finally heard back from MSN (after multiple email questions back and forth; namely asking for info I already furnished) and they suggested the issue might be due to my browser settings. They suggested some changes ....namely in the Active X Controls and Security Settings. Most were already set but several were not. I'll try out their suggestions and see if that works. If so, I'll let you know, but the more I hear it's nothing to do with my system or settings....just where I happen to fall in the chain of emails. Thanks again!

I've also had this happen, and I think it's because some folks attach the image, whereas other folks insert the image into the email. Wink

That makes sense....I saved a couple of the i_safe.gif images to my computer and they converted to bitmap images with no problem, but I've also used cut and paste to clean up lengthy emails and that didn't work at all. Of course, at the time I didn't really know why. I'm paying more attention to this situation now....Haven't received any since my first post but will update when it happens again.

Hello,

According to this entry in the Windows Live Hotmail Technical Support Blog, Microsoft is currently experiencing problems with Windows Live HotMail that sound similar to the symptoms you are experiencing. It looks like they have workarounds for some of the reported issues, while others are still being investigated.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

Thanks for your input. I really appreciate the feedback from everyone .... it helps me to understand the problem and realize it's something I can't necessarily control. I stumbled onto this site by accident...trying to find a solution, but you can bet it's in my favorites now. THANKS AGAIN!

Just an update on this issue.....I received an email containing an i_safe.gif image in Hotmail yesterday....same thing....gray box. Asked the sender to resend to my Yahoo mail account. Guess what .... came through PERFECT; however, the pic properties were different when sent to Yahoo. Rather than i_safe.gif, the format read: download?mid=1%5f2295%5fAPhKk0UAAHelSJUtuQksbhOLV9A&pid=2.2&fid=Inbox&inline=1. I resent the email from my Yahoo account to my MSN/Hotmail account and once again a gray box. Looks like this issue is truly a Hotmail issue.

Hotmail = Microsoft Rolling Eyes

Need I say more? Twisted Evil

You couldn't run fast enough or pay me enough to use that crapola!

Use GMail and avoid all sorts of problems with your email.

You can also set up Outlook Express to receive your GMail.
It's now a POP3 server and it's still FREE.

Cheers mate!

Hi...I've used MSN Hotmail for years prior to this recent problem. They could offer NO solution so I created free mail accounts at Yahoo and Gmail ...ran tests with both and each worked perfectly with these i_safe.gif images. I like Yahoo better only because you can forward messages from your contacts. That's not possible in Gmail....you have to type in each mail recipient when forwarding. All pics including i_safe.gif come through great in both. So now I'm using Yahoo exclusively for my mail. If you're having the same problem, my only suggestion would be to change from Hotmail. MSN suggested changes to my browser setting (did not help) and registry changes which I chose not to do since there was no problem using Yahoo or Gmail. Seems like the problem lies in Hotmail some how or another, but they could not correct and would not acknowledge a problem with Hotmail. As info, I used a friend to test these images in each mail program. They came through in Hotmail as a gray box, but that same email sent to Yahoo and Gmail are downloaded in each with a different format.....they don't come thru as i_safe.gif and are viewable without exception. Hope this helps you......Good luck.

Hello from a Newbie, I had to join the forum after reading this link about Hotmail and i_safe.gif. It has been bothering me for years ( been with hotmail 10+years - but will now change).
I have been annoyed by the Grey boxes - images replaced by i_safe.gif always found on forwarded messages from all my contacts.
I opened the same message today which was also forwarded to my web based personal (ntlworld.com) e mail address and the images display perfectly well on this same computer at the same time as the grey boxes in the hotmail message.
So i agree it's 100% a hotmail problem and i will stop using it from now on.
Thanks guys.
