Post subject: I can hear my neighbours .........

Okayyyyyyy ... a REALLY strange problem here. Very Happy
I can hear my neighbours! Shocked

More specifically, I can hear what is going on in there via a hi-fi system connected to my PC ... it's linked in to allow me to play music etc through there, hear games etc, and, naturally gives great sound, but late last night I could hear a dog yapping when all was otherwise silent.

I assumed that it was through the walls, but closer inspection revealed that the source was my speakers, confirmed simply by turning up the volume!
Hi-fi off, nothing. PC off, hi-fi on ... nothing ... which would seem to imply that the sound is somehow coming in via the PC Shocked

I KNOW it's next doors dog (has a bell around its neck(!) ), and if I turn up the volume I can even hear it turning in its bed ... and loads of other stuff too Embarassed Definitely the neighbours Very Happy

So ... anyone have any explanation, or thoughts / advice that extend beyond 'Shut up and listen' or 'Turn down the volume'? Laughing Laughing Laughing

Of course it also occurs, I guess, that transmission may well be a two-way issue, though I'm unaware of any such problem......... Shocked Very Happy

Allo Phil Smile

The 1st thought I thunked is: do your neighbours have any very young children? If so, they might have a wireless baby-alarm causing interference, especially if you have a wireless internet connection.

Hi Werebo Very Happy The plot thickens a little, though still no answers.
No small children involved, but the girlfriend apparently spends way too much time on her laptop! Boyfriend is a Luddite, knows nothing about computers, so is unaware of whether or not she may have a microphone built-in that was inadvertently left on and active (he is (was?) blissfully ignorant about the 'joys' of webcams, chatrooms etc.
So, one possible culprit, though another possibility was raised. A couple of weeks back, he added a wireless transmitter to send cable TV from lounge to a bedroom TV ... wonder whether this may be part of the problem, though do not really see how? ... I've a wireless router in place, but the wireless network is effectively disabled, as I link into via cables? Confused
Meanwhile, he's winding up G/F about how I can pick up ALL sorts of noises, not just the doggy ones .... and she has been keeping a very low profile Laughing

Have a look outside, see any service trucks that stay all day. If you do see one watch for somebody to come by every hour or so with coffee and donuts for the guys inside. Wink

I suppose one easy way to narrow down the source would be to unplug the PC from the router, next time they have a 'noise'-session Wink

If you can still hear them, then you've eliminated everything outside the PC .

I've traced down 'noise' sources over the years and usually the person causing the 'noise' is more than happy to make it stop.

Once it was a Diathermy machine in a Chiropractors office tearing up all the CB radios in the area. He was very glad to be a good neighbor and get it fixed.
Actually, I was the one that fixed it.

Another case was a tree limb that had fallen on an electric fence, right next to a 2 Meter Amateur Radio Repeater. I found that and removed the limb.

Talk to the people next door and find out what kind of audio transmitter they might have. I'm sure they don't want their 'noises' being transmitted all over the neighborhood. Don't ya think?

Y'all have a great weekend now. Happy Fathers Day dads!

Many (many, many) years ago when CB radio was big in the US, we frequently got CB radio calls over our stereo system. It was usually only one side of the conversation, though: probably the person closest to us or with a power-boosted setup.
