| if the mutiplayer works fine is there anything else that could be causing me not being able to play the single player.
Also the driver did not make a difference.

Hi people! I'm new here, and was just after some help running COD2
I have 2 problems, that may or may not be linked.... and they happen when i try and run both the single player or the multiplayer....
The first problem says nothing when i load, complains that it was not shut down properly, and when i click either run in safe mode, or not, the game still refuses to open, nothing at all seems to happen.
The 2nd problem is a more specific one, with the error message
"The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application."
Sometimes i can get it to work by simply restarting my computer, but more often than not, it does not work.
I have tried reinstalling the game and it has not helped.
I have all the specs needed to run the game, and it runs well when it actually manages to load up
Thanks in advance for your help

If this is your PC then you can upgrade to the latest and greatest cards if you wanted.
Any one of these would run it quite nicely and anyone of these would run it incredibly nicely! |

That's one of the strangest things i've ever seen!
Are there any errors in the system and application logs?

Hello Bogalog and welcome to Lockergnome!
What are your system specs?
Do you only get this problem with COD2?
Are you hardware drivers up to date? |

err ok
-celeron D 2.53gHz
-Radeon 9550guru with 5.13 ati drivers
-768mb of ram
I had the same problems running before with 256mb of ram, and with different graphics drivers.
The error code 0xc0000005 i have seen with other programs, but nowhere near as often as with cod2
as far as i know, my drivers are all up to date, the only thing that i know that they are definately NOT up to date with are the sound drivers. because i get an unrelated error (as far as i know).
Also my sound card is some inbuilt one realtek '97 or something |

Hello, I've been reading through various forums, website guides. And have even checked Call of Duty 2's own knowledge base to try and solve the Direct X issue I have.
The error is the "Direct X has encountered an irrecoverable error" which seems to be a common problem.
I have both updated all my drivers, and have backdated them each time making a clean sweap the clear old files. I have reinstalled DirectX 9.0c. Along with re-installing the game. All to no avail. Furthermore, even tweaking of the graphics options in game doesn't seem to allieviate any of it. Changing the rendering mode from DirectX 9 to a previous version does nothing. As I still reciever the same error, and at the exact same time/interval during the load process.
The strangest thing is, I was able to play through the first level without a single problem, with graphics at almost their maximum setting (sans Anti-aliasing).
My Desktop is
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (2.0Ghz)
1GB DDR Ram
GeForce FX 6600GT 128mb
Now here's what I'm also confused about. The game runs at any graphics setting on my laptop (however highend is significantly lower FPS).
Laptop -
Intel Pentium 4 2.53 Ghz
512mb DDR Ram
ATI Mobility 9700 with Discrete 128mb of Ram
Initially I thought the problem was actually due to my video cards being different. However after several trial and errors, I'm convinced it has to be something else. Any ideas or theories would be greatly appreciated. |

Hello Jamin the Troll and welcome to Lockergnome!
You could try using older drivers such as the Nvidia 77.77 drivers. Give it a try maybe it'll work for you. Remember to uninstall the existing drivers before you install the new ones.
Hello bogalog!
Your graphics card drivers seem to be out of date, a link to the newer one is in my signature.
Your sound card drivers can be updated from the Realtek website or from the computer manufacturers website. |

Thanks very much for your help Zeus, however, recently i have noticed that other games have been having the same problem as i mentioned in the first point.
Games will start to open, and even have the display resize, and then quit without any error message at all.
This has happened in Call of Duty, Call of Duty 2, and age of empires 2.
I have also had the 2nd error (0xc0000005) on other games, such as Doom 3.
I will update both the graphics card, and realtek drivers, and get back
Edit: I have installed both updates, and still no improvement. still getting the quiting of games with no error message at all
Edit2: OK, was playing doom 3, quit the game, loaded a different graphics card setting (using ati tray tools) and suddenly Doom 3 and call of duty 2 came up with the (0xc0000005) error... this should help narrow it down  |

Graphics cards and video cards are actually the same thing.
Sorry about that I took it for granted that you'd know.
For some reason different people call certain hardware different things....don't know why :hmm: |

Hello,
I am yet another person having trouble running CoD 2...i have read many forums and this one seems to offer the best advice...well i have tried many solutions to this problem from updating graphics drivers, sound drivers, and directx...to changing my memory page file!! anywho it still does absolutely nothing..o ya by the way the error message is the same as most everyone elses the "directx has encountered a problem" thing sometimes this message pops up right in the middle of loading a mission and sometimes (depending on the settings i messed with) it pops up whenever i go to startup Cod 2...well i will go ahead and answer the magical question that i know u need to know "What are your system specs?" lol ok here it goes
nForce4 sli edition mainboard
AMD Athlon 64 3700 processor 2.21 ghz
1024 mb of installed memory (2 256 and 1 512)
250 gb harddrive and 80gb harddrive
2 burners and 1 dvd-rom burner
Nvidia geforce 7800gt 256mb (latest drivers) (not running sli..i wish! lol)
realtek 97 integrated sound (latest drivers)
Directx 9.0c (december edtion)
Windows xp pro service pack 2
if there is any other information you need just ask...by the way my computer is not proprietary i built it myself...
Thank you for your time!

Struggled with this Directx error for a few days...Tried every fix on the internet. The activision resolution is a complete joke.
On second russian mission the console logs end with :
"Out of video memory...
Could not create vertex buffer". Fairly self explanatory.
atm running a 7800GT 256MB, 81.98 drivers. Bogstandard ac97 realtek onboard audio also latest drivers. 2GB ram, 4400X2. could be a dual core problem - latest HT patch makes no difference to the error message.
Possible an Nforce issue ?
I do have a 5900FX lying around I could give a whirl but who wants to play on older hardware when you've seen this baby shine on a 7800?
Interestingly sometimes a clean driver reinstall got me through the error once, then subsequent reloads die. Changing the directx code path to directx7 doesnt have any effect any more either. Judging from the number of successful players around, this problem wont be a priority fix for activision.
The british missions load so I'll play them in the meantime..?go figure?
Just sharing my experience with this, no fix here!!
