If you are looking to format a partition with a Linux file system such as ext2 or ext3, one GUI application you may feel comfortable with is Gparted. It is a great deal more than a partition formatter though. With it you can create, delete, resize and format partitions with a number of supported file systems including ext2, ext3, fat12, fat16, fat32, and (I believe) NTFS. I use Mandriva here, so I am unsure if Suse includes a partition manager. If it does, it may do more than Gparted.
