how can the file size's be off on my system?
i keep it updated all the time, there was an update to fix that,
but the sizes are still wrong. Sad

this is not good when you have to keep track of the amount of space used on website hosts, you make the file the size you can use only to find that it wont fit because windows has told you the wrong size, it is only through the ftp program or the html file uploader that you find the real size of the file, which is almost always half an MB bigger then what windows said. Mad

does anyone know what is able to cause this and how to fix it?

Are you sure that the file size IS wrong? It may be that your download setup (HTML/FTP) is adding a header for it's own purpose. Copy the file to another medium (floppy, thumbdrive, etc.). You will probably see the file size stays the same.

but i still have to check the size of the copied file in windows.

so it will of course say the same size it said when i checked it on the hard drive.

but i did not think of the header being added by any of the uploading programs. is there normaly anyway to turn that header off in client side ftp programs. so they send the same size as the file,?

Confused

Can you give us an example such as file1 at thisplace =xKB file1 at thatplace =yKB?

Also have you tried to upload the file in question, change the file name on your system, download the file then look through them for changes?

This one has got me so I won't even PRETEND to know the answer - but I will interject some info...

If I get this correctly, it SHOULD report the size of the files as they are after copying / downloading. But M$ is know for it discrepancies in file reporting. Just look at the info on disk usage as an example, you will find two readouts.

If you haven't already, I suggest looking in M$ database for any know issues or bugs. or do a google & see if anyone else has hit this, as I agree, it doesn't sound right.

Sorry, I can't be of any real help. - but as always, if I run across anything, I'll pass it to you.

example is simple

media player skin zip file is on windows 2.97mb's uploaded it is 3.05 mb's. downloaded 2.97 mb's same file
stuck in email to send is 3.05 mb's

does not make any sense. at the amount of difference does change with files. it is not always the same .08 mb's off. it can be 2 mb's off.

strange as it may seem the size of the hd's is correct.
its just this changing of files going to and from the web servers.

the avg program can't find anything hiding in them so if that is the case its unknown what it is but that can't even be the trouble. because the size goes down when coming back from online just one strange bug, that makes it really hard to keep the web site updated when this error is around, and your website is only less then 1.5 mb's of room left. Confused

i did not look in the database just came here babytux Smile

Cool

Don't know if this HELPs, BUT..............
In my past HTML/FTP schooling, I remember being told that "headers/footers" are added to a file sent across the Internet for "routing" purposes. Once the file reaches its destination, it is "stripped" of those additions making the file back to original size.

When grabbing LINUX distros from the NET, they provide a "file size checker" file.
A. They want to make sure the file reached you "in tacked".
B. They know the Internet Protocols add extra data for transit purposes.

Hope this helps.

yes i can understand what your saying but it does not get smaller again when it is posted for download on the web.

and when i download it sometimes it does not get smaller after it is saved to the hard drive. its like it is adding something that is not being removed but nothing is added only the numbers have changed,

sometimes uploading to a web site with very little room if the header or both the header and footer are added they don't remove in time and the file fails to upload because of lack of room.

now either that happens or the file really is being reported wrong in size on my system.

it is something that is not right and it bugs the daylights out of me cause i can't make my files any smaller, and i am not even sure of the size of them since this is not working proper.

but until they at the m$ company get things fixed then i'll have to live with it.

Hello,

Are you and your web host using the same file systems on your computers, and have they been configured to use the same sector size, cluster size, block size, number of inodes and so forth? If not, then perhaps the discrepancy is in how the file system allocated space for the file on the disk, so the files occupty slightly different amounts of disk space even though the actual number of bytes remains the same.

Regards,
