PostPosted: Sun Mar 07, 2010 1:10 am    Post subject: okay so another error i'm having is.

sound stopping the volume is turned up but the sound just stops.
the player controls keep moving sometimes and sometimes they also stop.

99% of the time this happens is always on the same playlist that is timed to play at the same time every day.

it starts at one pm. and i have to keep restarting the songs all that hour until two pm when the next list starts it then plays all day and all night and all day until one pm and that playlist again.

i've changed the playlist. i re edited the song files and cut the volume down in them.

i've found unwanted task jobs running that i disabled. i've done checkdisk and defrag'ed the hd. cleaned the registry got rid of the junk files.

just what is going on i don't know? some one in another forum thought it might be the sound card.

so i tried to change to the onboard audio. it would not show when i looked for the sound in the device selection on the sound properties panel.

i checked and seen the cmac97 drivers had a yellow ! mark. so i found the drivers at majorgeeks and installed them on that computer.

the yellow ! is gone now and the drivers have got the cmac97 working proper now.

so i moved the cord from the sound card to the onboard audio,
but i can't find the onboard device in the properties yet.

and i went in to the bios and turned on the audio device well set it to enable.

but still not showing the onboard sound yet?

does anyone know what drivers i need for the onboard audio on the pcchips mb's

or if that would even fix the sound stopping in the music player.

thanks. Surprised

I'm not sure what would cause the sound to stop at the same time every day except possibly some other event starting at that time. Maybe a virus scan, a malware scan or a backup. Check what time those events occur. Try having that playlist start at a different time and having a different playlist start at 1pm.

For the onboard sound drivers go to the mobo manufacturer's website.

To get the onboard sound to work try physically removing the sound card from the case. It's possible that the mobo might be detecting the sound card and disabling the onboard sound.

i had the same problem when xp first came out . after reading different forums i found out it was chkdsk stealing parts of the data. there was a program to retrieved the lost segments ,if they hadn't been deleted.

checkdisk stealing parts of data?
what parts for the sound stopping or for the onboard sound not working?

is there now some update from ms i have to download and take to that computer?

not sure if that would be it because i found some more info today on the sound stopping.

it seems the songs that stop also play at times? but when they stop the player is reporting the time lenght of the song to be longer then it really is.

but when it does play the song it reports the proper time so something is changing things or messing with something in the code for the player.

is that what you are talking about with checkdisk stealing data?
if so what software did you get to fix that?

Cool

yep i did that when i first installed the system. i used no sound card and tried to get the onboard to work. and it did not.

? um thinking about it before i put the card in it did show the onboard to pick from in the device area for sound. but now it don't? might just be turning it off when it finds the card. but then i did disable the onboard audio in the bios and it didn't.? Embarassed well it wouldn't work when i disabled it. so i guess with it enabled it is blocking on board in favor of the sound card. ?
but this computer does not block it. it shows both in this computer the onboard and the card.?

thanks for the help. Cool

it was becoming appearnt that the trouble was software related.

so i started doing things. and i think the removeal of almost 1000 unwanted and un used wav files forced the program to re make its database thus fixing the error.

i hope its fixed its been working now for two days in a row with out doing it.

Cool

Hi Keith, Just 2 days ago I fixed a problem, sound and video stopping.
I found the Firefox cache was set too small. I upped the limit from 50 Mb
to 200 Mb and entire clip was seen. Quicktime has a similar setting.
The clip was a QT thing. Other apps probably have similar settings.
Sound and video files can get real big, and some apps may not clear cache
so well. A bit like using swap files. Firefox had been known to have
memory management issues some time ago. ??? Best wishes, zzron

thanks i figured all that about caches before i set up the computer. its been normal for me ever since win98 to go and add all the same if updated for the new os. memory programs or new ones.

cleanmem found at majorgeeks.com is good one to keep ram hog programs in check.

analogx has redid his maxmem program for use on xp and large ram systems.

plus i always up the swap file its one of the first things i do.

i also use priority static controller its a program found at majorgeeks.com and works on my xp pro to keep the programs in the higher priority mode i set them in. so i've got it pretty much set up

still nice knowing some one has found that to be the trouble with the same issue on another system. Very Happy

latest for me on this issue is as follows.

i just removed the old sound card, found it was a win 98 and nt card only but it don't like xp pro.
still that was not the cause of the error only of bad sound,.

i found the drivers for the onboard sound and i got them installed and am now using soundmax and got better sound. the avg program i updated and set it to run the shell scanner from the tray icon. it found an unwanted pest and healed the file. but the pest was just an test code in a program so it worked it found the test program code.

but i really think the issue is fixed by forcing the database in the program to be rebuilt.

so thanks for the help.
Cool Smile

keith.

If you have wireless bluetooth (keyboard, mouse, etc.) disconnect and try.
I have had very similar intermittent audio problems with a couple of customers' computers.
The last one was a 3 month old $1500 Dell, using Dell wireless bluetooth mouse and keyboard.
I put a wireless usb keyboard and usb mouse on the system after recovering the operating system and trying many adjustments. Voila! After 2 days the customer called with good news; I installed adifferent wireless keyboard/mouse system and they have had NO problems since.
Good luck, Terry
