Did you have another computer connected to the Comcast (maybe Motorola Surfboard) modem before you bought this one?
The ipconfig is used when you have several computers on your home network and a router is involved. The router assigns the IP. So if you don't have a router, the commands you typed really wouldn't apply. |

To make perfectly clear: The problem is either with your internet connection, or with your computer.
1. To test the internet connection, you should find a computer that connects correctly elsewhere, and try it with your connection. Borrow a friend's computer. It would be best if this friend was a computer geek.
2. To test the computer, take it to a known working internet connectivity site. Best would probably be the same computer geek friend's residence. Try it there.
Once we know whether the problem is with the ISP or with the computer, we can then provide more intelligent advice. |

| Connect the problem PC directly to the cable modem and power cycle the cable modem and then reboot the PC. Some times the cable modem will retain the MAC address of the previous device that was connected to it. To get it to update and read the mac address from a different PC you need to power cycle it. |

Open device manager and see if there are any problems with the NIC. Is there a yellow ? or ! after its entry? Even if it looks OK you might want to right click its entry under network adapters and uninstall it. Reboot and let windows install it again. If it still doesn't work go on line (with another PC) and download the latest drivers. Then update the drivers and try again.
Open up the properties for that network connection and have a look at the TCP/IP properties. Make sure Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected. What does ipconfig/all list for an ip address. It doesn't matter what you are connected to as far as the ipconfig command goes it just displays all current TCP/IP network configuration values and refreshes Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
Did you remove any viruses or other nasties on that PC? That can mess up the network stack. If so you may want to try this. WinSockFix |

Three questions:
Did this computer ever connect to the internet?
Did you change anything, or install new software or do updates just before it stopped working (if it did work before)
Does this computer talk to other computers on the network, and just not to the internet, or is it a matter of not seeing the network at all? |

| If all you get is that phrase then something in your networking is really fubared. Try running winsockfix and or re-installing the NIC. One other option is to boot from your XP CD and do a repair. That will replace any missing or damaged windows system files. |

| He never stated if he turned the modem off when he connected a different computer. If you DO NOT TURN THE MODEM OFF, you will never be able to get a different computer to access the internet. The modem stores the MAC address of the computer connected to it. If you change computers, you need to power down the modem so it "forgets" the MAC it has stored. |

| We need a some better info I think. He did say he has 3 other PCs that work on his network but he didn't say if he was using a router or plugging each PC in one at a time. You don't always have to turn the modem off by the way, buts its good practice, especially if you are having connection problems. I can swap routers here at home without ever touching my cable modem. |

I believe that you shuld start with the basic test of seeing if your NIC is working. Then we can zero in on the area to "fix". Disconnect everything from the computer ... Go to START|Run and type in CMD ... When the black DOS screen comes up type in the following command ... PING 127.0.0.1 <enter>
If you get 4 replys then the NIC is seeing itself at least and the software is PROBABLY set up correctly ... If not then you may have an internal hardware problem or the TCP/IP stack is goofed up.
The second step is to reconnect the Ethernet cable (implying that the first test worked) and in the DOS screen type in ... IPCONFIG <enter>
You shoiuld get a four line display with the name of your Modem/Router - Your IP address - Your subnet mask - Default Gateway
Your address SHOULD be something like 192.168.xxx.yyy
If you get something like 169.aaa.bbb.ccc then you are not getting connected to the Modem/Router and receiving an address.
Come back after this and let us know how far you get. |

| Did it look OK in device manager? Did you download and install the latest drivers for that NIC? If you have or can get another NIC to install and try I would try that. Un-install the one thats not working in device manager and go into the BIOS and disable the onboard NIC first. If the new NIC works my bet is the onboard NIC is broken/defective. If the new NIC doesn't work and you have the same problem then I would say something in windows is messed up. In that case I would do a repair or re-install windows. |
