Hello,

Many notebook computers use CR-2032 (or, less frequently, CR-2016) 3-Volt Lithium coin cells for their CMOS/RTC backup battery, but not all notebooks contain a battery holder clip like a desktop computer motherboard does, since this requires clearances which often don't fit inside a laptop's miniscule dimensions. Often batteries have wires welded to their positive and negative sides with a keyed connector to plug into pins on laptop's logic board. Sometimes two or three batteries are welded together in parallel to increase their capacity. In cases where the battery doesn't snap into a holder, they are covered by shinkwrap tubing to prevent a short-circuit.

Usually, one can get a replacement for a dead laptop's CMOS/RTC battery "pack" at a battery store--if they don't have the exact model in stock, they can usually make one by taking apart the old one and soldering its wires to a new battery or batteries.

Regards

1. Did you hold the power button in for 10 seconds?
2. Did you remove all the devices except for 1 stick of RAM?
3. If you did the previous steps, I still need to know what happens to the light on the AC adapter (I don't need to know what happens to the lights on the computer). I'm running through a troubleshooting wizard on Dell's site and stalled at that step because I don't know whether the answer is: a) the AC adapter light went out once connected to the system or b) the AC adapter light remains lit after connecting to the system.

Well, Shadow, it gives me gas too...

Dude,

Did you ever get that CMOS battery installed? Question Question Question

Don't spend the money on a MoBo until you have the battery! Exclamation Exclamation Exclamation THE BATTERY could be why the MoBo is so flakey! Exclamation Exclamation Very Happy

Then, ZLim seems to have found a troubleshooting guide on the Dell web site, I would run thru those steps, after installing the battery first!!! Very Happy

No sense in ordering a ???? MoBo from EBay, when it could be a component causing the MoBo to act up. You asked for help, give a listen to the answers we have provided.

This may NOT be one of those "poof" instant answer problems, it may require you to perform some logical steps in sequence to resolve it.

The absolute FIRST Step is that CMOS battery!!! I'd not spend another penny until you get that. Idea Idea Idea

However, if you wish to throw money at the problem, buy the Shadow a plane ticket, he'll come lay hands on your laptop and "heal it" for you! Wink

Cheers! Cool
