Fairly simple problem I hope?
Using Vista Home Premium, I've a Linksys wireless modem, two PCs hard-wired to it, a laptop using the wireless access facility.
What I'm looking for is some software (preferably freeware Smile ) that will allow me to control (from one of the hard-wired Pcs) internet access on the laptop ... that is, limit the bandwidth available to the laptop, or even deny access completely, in the simplest, most painless way possible. Very Happy
Any ideas please?

Go into the router setup 192.168.1.1
1. Turn off remote administration. That means no one on wireless can change settings and lock you out of your own router setup.
2. Set up an SSID (similar to a username) and a password. Don't tell the laptop what the password is.
3. Look at MAC filtering. Don't put the MAC address of the wireless car into the MAC table. This will allow only computers (wireless) with the correct MAC to use the wireless connection. Or there is also a setting that says, prevent wireless computers with the MAC address listed from accessing the wireless. If you want to prevent a son or daughter from accessing the internet overnight, put the MAC address in the table before you go to bed and the laptop gets no wireless connection until you change it the next morning.

You will have to get some other suggestions on limiting the bandwidth. I have no idea how to do that.

I did stumble across this under Wireless/Advanced Wireless settings Data Transmission Rate:
The default setting is Auto. The range is from 1 to 54Mbps.

The rate of data transmission should be set depending on the speed of your wireless network. You can select from a range of transmission speeds, or keep the default setting, Auto, to have the Router automatically use the fastest possible data rate and enable the Auto-Fallback feature. Auto-Fallback will negotiate the best possible connection speed between the Router and a wireless client.

So maybe if you change the wireless data transmission rate from auto to 1Mbps that would make the access extremely slow.
