well interestingly enough I just got an error code from an earlier crash when I did a reboot before to test something.
Category (102) Event ID 1003

Error Code 100000ea, parameter1 86049950, parameter2 85a7b328, parameter3 f7c6dcbc, parameter4 00000001

I'm running:
Intel P4 3.0
Gigabyte 8IP775/G main board
Seagate 160GB HD
1GB DDR-SDRAM
Nvidia Geforce FX 5600XT
XP Home wth SP2

if anyone could shed any light on this it'd be much appreciated, if not thanks for reading anyway

Allo Strangeone and welcome to the Lockergnome Forums Very Happy

How much RAM does your system have??? or more specifically, what size is the faulty RAM card???

If possible, take it out and run your system without it, until you can replace it. Bad memory can be a royal pain-in-the-socks!!! If it's an area that's only sometimes used by Windows, then your work will all end in tears.

Running your system on less memory will be a lot more stable, and only slightly slower than usual.

Since Memtest gave you many errors in a few minutes - it's most likely the RAM that's hosed! Personally I don't accept any errors in the RAM when I test it - but others will tell you that a few are OK.

I've got a similar problem with my "fail-safe" system (the one that's not tweaked) and can't even get Memtest to run on it!

Check to see if the fans in the power supply are working. If the power supply feels hot your system could be overheating which can cause the machine to shut down without notice then when it cools down it can be restarted, this is something that I personally have to watch for in all of my machines. Another thing is the CPU fan can become clogged with dustbunnies causing overheating.

Allo Irontruck and welcome to the Lockergnome Forum

I agree about dust build-up on fans... There's nowt worse than diced dustbunnies scattered about a PC's insides Laughing

hello again, I regularly clean dust on both the CPU and PSU fans and the system temp is stable according to Motherboard Monitor so hopefully it isn't an overheating issue.

have not had a crash in more than 2 days now, or whenever my last post was, and have been using the system constantly. if it keeps reoccuring though I'll just buy some new memory and hopefully that'll fix it, knowing my luck though I'll go through new memory, psu and motherboard or something before it stops!

thanks again for your help guys

Another thought, how about the switch connections to the motherboard or something intermittenly shorting out like a hidden broken wire or even the power cord, I'm speaking from personal experience

A friend has a pc that was shutting down at random. He replaced the power supply and it is fine now.

There's many, many reasons for an intermittent shutdown - and it requires a lot of patience to troubleshoot.

I've had random reboots due to power surges, bad memory, and a bad NIC card. I've currently got the problem with an untweaked PC that's been fine running for a couple of years without problems.

There are several things that you can do to start troubleshooting this issue.

1) Check Device Manager to see if there's any yellow !'s or red x's by any of the devices.

2) Check your event viewer for error messages in the system sub-category

3) Go to Start...Control Panel...System...Advanced tab...Startup and Recovery Settings button. Uncheck the box that says "Automatically restart". The next time it restarts (if it is a BSOD) it will stop on the BSOD. You can then get all the information and post it here.

4) Stop errors are usually hardware related - and the majority (in my experience) are due to corrupt/faulty drivers. Start updating your drivers - here's the sequence that I use:
- Windows Update
- Mobo/chipset drivers
- Video drivers
- LAN/NIC drivers
- Sound drivers
- Any other onboard devices drivers
- Any other hardware devices drivers

5) Troubleshoot the hardware pieces by replacing them, one at a time, with parts that are known to be good.

I did the whole restart thing and no BSOD came up. It must be hardware related or something.

Okay I've checked my event viewer and I had tons of problems, haha. Tell me the info I need to put down on here. There was too much stuff and I didn't know what you guys needed to be able to determine the problem.

Here's a link about how to use the Event Viewer: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic40108.html

What we're looking for is the groups of numbers that are similar to the 0x0000007b format.

Other errors may be helpful, but you'd have to post a list of them for us to see which ones need looking at. You can generate the list by going to the Action menu item and selecting Export List. This will give you a text document with the title of the errors. Then, give us the last day or two's worth of errors to look at.

For this type of error we are usually most interested in the System category - although applications in the Application category can also generate error messages. If you've got security errors my advice is to perform a repair install of XP on your system (since the security isn't working correctly).

Okay I made two text documents of the Application and System category.

The latest of errors for Application is:

Error 7/23/2006 | 6:31:31 PM | Ci | CI Service

- Content index on c:\system volume information\catalog.wci could not be initialized. Error 3221225620.

Comment: This one above is an ongoing error meaning it comes up a lot.
------------------------------------------------

The latest of errors for System is:

Error 7/23/2006 | 12:52:39 PM | Dhcp | None

- The IP address lease [my IP address] for the Network Card with network address 0010DC9C98A9 has been denied by the DHCP server 192.168.1.1 (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message).

Comment: This also is an ongoing error.

Aside to strangeone and State_Enemy - please start your own thread for your problem (you can include a link to this thread to avoid having to repost your comments). FWIW strangeone - the error message that you gave indicates that there may be a problem with your video card drivers or the card itself. Add your memory errors to this and I think you may have been the victim of a power surge recently.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi pookabay!

The first error is either with your Indexing service or you System Restore - the likely result of this is that you won't be able use System Restore to restore your system to an earlier date

The next error is with your internet connection. The DHCP Server (in the router) has denied your computer a lease on the network connection. The most likely result of this is that you may experience a slow or broken connection to the web.

Neither of these seems to be a "crash" type of error - so we'll have to proceed in a different direction.

First, have you checked your Device Manager for yellow !'s or red x's? If so, were there any? If not, go to Start...Run...and type in "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Then let us know the result.

After this, try running a memory tester off of a floppy disk. Run the test for at least 2 hours (overnight is best). I suspect that this is the most likely problem - putting a vacumn cleaner wand into a PC generates static electricity and it may have hosed your memory and other components inside the case.

Memory Test Software Links:

http://www.simmtester.com/page/products/doc/download.asp
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
http://www.memtest.org/
http://www.memtest86.com/

http://www.hcidesign.com/ (will run in Windows but is not as reliable as the others - which don't run in Windows)

Install this free utility to monitor your temperatures and your hard drive status: http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php Let us know your temps and the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard drive.

You may want to invest a few bucks in a power supply tester - but the cheap one's won't test it under load (which is when the problem seems to be occurring).
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The next step would be to reinstall Windows - first with a repair installation and then with a format of your hard drive and a clean installation. This is followed by updating all of your drivers to their latest version. This may help the problem, but (if I'm correct) it won't cure it.

The reason that I say "if I'm correct" is because I've got a nagging suspicion that the static electricity from the vacumn cleaner may have damaged some of the parts inside your computer. The RAM and the vid card memory are particularly susceptible to this.

Then it's a matter of switching out parts to determine what's at fault. To minimize the cost, strip the system down to just these items:

Case
Motherboard
CPU, cooler and fan
Memory (RAM)
Video Card
Power Supply
Floppy drive (CD drive if you don't have a floppy)
Keyboard

Now, if the memory passed it's testing we'll presume that it's good. Now, get a bootdisk from http://www.bootdisk.com. Almost any one will do - I'd suggest the Windows98 or ME one - but all that's critical is the ability to boot into DOS.

Then boot the stripped down system into DOS and see if it shuts down on you. If it does, the error is from one of those parts that you're using - switch them out, one by one, with known good ones until it stops. If it doesn't - then start adding parts back in (start with the mouse and then the hard drive so you can boot into Windows) one by one until the error recurs. That should point out which part is at fault.

Thank you. If it is that my computer parts are messed up, I might just save up for a new computer. I really don't like this one anyway.

I'll list the temps below:

Temp1: 36C

Temp2: 39C

Temp3: 28C

The S.M.A.R.T. results were normal, it said.

Today I finally got a Microsoft Windows error message. My computer shut off today and I had a disk check scheduled. Once it was done, my computer loaded up and the error report popped up with this in the data:

BCCode : 1000007f BCP1 : 00000008 BCP2 : 80042000 BCP3 : 00000000 BCP4 : 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 768_1

This may not be the solution to the problem that originated this thread, but many people read these threads that never post. Maybe this will help someone, someplace with a similar problem.

When ever I clean out a PC, I of course clean the CPU cooling fan and heatsink. But right next to the CPU, in most computers, is the ram.
It gets blasted by the waste air leaving the CPU heatsink. It also is electrically charged and attracts dust and dirt like a magnet. I've seen ram sticks that were packed solid with dirt.

This not only causes the ram to overheat, but it can also short out from the dirt getting in between the little legs on the sides of the ram chips.
If any ram fails the memory tests or if it's just plain dirty, I always wash it.

Washing is the last step in PC board manufacturing, so it's a perfectly natural way of cleaning off impurities.

I've done this for many years and feel perfectly comfortable with it.
I just remove the ram stick from the PC, take it to the kitchen sink and rinse it off with warm water. Then I apply a few drops of "Dawn" or whatever dishwashing liquid detergent I have handy and then use an old toothbrush to scrub all the dirt off of the ram-stick.
I really concentrate my efforts on those little leads coming off the sides of the ram chips.

Once I'm sure that I've removed all the dirt, I rinse the stick thoroughly with warm water. Then I shake off as much water as I can and rinse again with Denatured Alcohol. Rubbing Alcohol will work, but not as well.

Finally I shake off all the alcohol I can and place the ram-stick on edge in a warm and well veltilated place to dry. I like to leave it overnight if I can.

Then I reinstall the ram in the motherboard and run the ramtest again.
Usually, you'll find the errors are GONE. If not, then replace the ram.

I also use this same technique for the ram on video cards when I see lines on my screen or colored pixels randomly appearing on the screen.
Ram is ram, regardless of where it's used. When it gets dirty, it will fail.

I hope I haven't bored anyone, but I just felt that this needed some saying. (I run into dirty system ram and video ram so often in my PC repair business. A little soap and water costs virtually nothing and solves so many problems)

Good Luck and Happy Computing!

Shadow Cool
