It shuts down on it's own every now and then. The computer will still be on, but my monitor screen turns black and the light turns from green to orange. Sometimes my computer will restart itself after a few seconds.
I could be designing in Photoshop or just talking online - even doing absolutely nothing on it, and without any notice, my computer does what I said above.
I've tried to clean it out, but it will still continue to shut off on me. My OS is Windows XP. I've had this computer for 2-3 years I believe, and had this problem for maybe 2 years? If there's any way to solve this problem, please let me know. It will be appreciated.
You can also go to Start...Control Panel...System...Advanced tab...Startup and Recovery Settings button...and uncheck the box that says "Automatically restart". The next time that your system restarts, it'll stop on the Blue Screen so you can copy down the information.

Thanks for welcoming me!
My computer turns back on and works fine. Sometimes I get an error message from Microsoft Windows saying something like, "An error has occurred etc, etc." And then I have to restart the computer again or else the error will just keep popping up when I exit it.
I'm not sure what a 3rd party screensaver is, I just use a regular Windows one.

If I go through with that, should the blue screen show me the error which causes my computer to act this way?

It could possibly be a heat issue. Remove the side panel or case cover and inspect all the fans to make sure they are operating properly especially the CPU and vid card fans.
Temporarily you can place a small fan next to the case for a day or so and if the restarts go away then you know it is a heat issue...

If the metal vanes on the CPU heatsink are too hot to touch with a fingertip, then it's definitely too hot. If the vanes are warm(ish), then the CPU is ok, as far as overheating is concerned.
This does bring to mind another possibility though, 'Thermal Creep'... Lots 'n' lots of heating and cooling can cause the various cards and chips to 'creep' out of the sockets slightly, causing intermittent contact.
Try gently pushing all the expansion cards and chips mounted in sockets back down into their corresponding sockets.

The complete error report is important here to keep you from chasing down each & every reason we can all think of for this to occur. If you get another please read & copy report here ( when error reporting is happening there is a link included to the report usually, or whats in the report). Heat as they have already said is 1st in my mind, but, I can think of at least 3 or 4 other things too. I think you are getting the BSOD but its passing you by too fast for you to read also as usasma noted try to look at the time the next time it happens & check you event viewer, something has to be causing it, but a lot of guessing will waste a lot of your time & maybe give your machine more time to pfffffffttttt. Did I read correctly that this has been happening for 2 years ? How could you have stood it ? Id have taken a hammer to my machine by now lol. BTW what kind of computer is it ? That could make a difference. Perhaps this behavior has been recorded for that model before & there is a fix for it ?
Just an old clown tryin to help
Have a gr8 day all

Dude!! - I had the exact same problems w/ my computer about 2 weeks ago.....actually 2 of them in the office were doing the exact same thing. I tried different video cards, monitors, power supplies, memory, i tried to narrow it down to a particular software, i ran diagnostics, checked & double checked for viruses, worms, trojans, I checked for overheating, dust, small furry animals living in the heat sink......EVERYTHING!!
Finally after a lot of search on the internet, I finally found some wierd lil' obscure webpage where people were discussing some stuff about how DELL GX270 & GX280 motherboards had bad capicators & were shutting off randomly.
Guess what - my 2 computers were DELL GX270's. Well, I called DELL & told them all this & they didn't claim to know anythign about bad motherboards, & even though I told them I had already checked all the things listed above & ran full DELL diagnostics, they still refused to help me any further until I ran the diagnostics 1 more time & called them back (whatever??).
Anyhow, they replaced both motherboards at their cost & ever since then, I've had ZERO problems w/ random shutdowns....& everything else is exactly the same (videocards, memory, drives, etc. etc.)
So I dunno if you have a DELL or not - but in any case thats what happened to me - maybe this will help you diagnose your problem & get it fixed too.

I have a Compaq Presario 6000, if that's what it's name is? I don't know too much about computers really, lol. I cleaned out my computer a bit ago and it was dusty. I tried to get all I could, but my fan wasnt powerful enough to get the dust stuck to my fans. I need to buy a new vacuum cleaner bag. Could that be the problem I said above about the fans?

If you lightly brush a fingertip across the metal heatsink vanes on the CPUand you say "OUCH!!!" cos it's too hot, then yes, I'd say you have a overheating problem, if it's only warm to the touch, then the CPU is fine ...
Assuming the CPU is ok, that leaves the likelihood of either a failing motherboard or failing power supply unit ...
To remove the dust that's stuck to the fan blades, try a small soft artist's paint brush (without the paint ) to brush it off.
Take care when using a vacuum cleaner inside a PC though, the rapid air-movement has been known to generate large amounts of static-electricity, which is a PC's worst nightmare...

hi all, I've been having a very similar problem in the last few weeks. Monitor flashes on and off a few times randomly and then the system reboots itself. Sometimes I can manage to shut down properly while the screen is flashing on and off, but most of the time I just get a 'no signal' message.
I have not been getting ANY error messages, either on Windows startup or in event viewer.
The reboots seem to happen almost always when I am using a program called PeerGuardian2, when I am updating it and 'Generating List Cache' especially.
Overall it doesn't seem to be a drastic problem but it is annoying. I'd say it happens once every 2-3 days or so.
I ran Memtest and the culprit could very well be bad memory - I got many errors on one stick within a few minutes. Haven't replaced yet so I don't know if that's definitely the problem, but it more than likely is, that or the video card
