Hello, and thanks for your time, Ive been going round in circles with this one. When I try to copy files (any type) to cd, I get "D:\is inaccessable, incorrect function". Nothing I try seems to resolve this Sad , Ive tried copying from command prompt, with right click on file(s) and send to, drag n drop, nothing works. Ive updated drivers, uninstalled through device manager and let windows reinstall, Ive tried to access the "recording" tab on drive properties window, but that isnt there, there is a reg tweak to fix this but that doesnt seem to work either,

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316529

When I open the registry and go to the suggested key, the pane on the right has only one line in there, "Default value not set".
using xp pro, sp2. Drive is Phillips RW SDVD8820
Dell laptop Inspiron 1300
So, any ideas anyone, Ive googled the hell out of this with no luck,Techdunce Smile

1. Remove nero InCD
2. Open Windows Explorer and right click on the burner. Go to Properties; Click on Recording; Check "Enable CD recording on this drive". (If you do not have a recording tab then you probably need to uninstall and reinstall the burner).
3. What are the dates on the driver?
4. Have you tried system restore to a point when it was working?
5. Have you tried a different brand of CD/DVD?

Then after all that stuff......have you considered just replacing the drive?

They do fail, you know.......???

I was just at a PC today, another Dell, where the DVD burner was replaced about two years ago......today it was DEAD.
NO read and of course, NO WRITE.

Believe me, as a tech, I know DEAD!
And it was certainly DEAD!

It happens! Even to nice people. Crying or Very sad

Cheers mate!

Hello Doc and Zlim, thanks for getting back on this. I dont think its the cd drive Doc as I can copy and burn with Nero, but it can be much slower than just drag n drop. So, pretty sure its a software issue.
Zlim, not too sure what you mean by "remove nero InCD".
The driver date is 1/3/2007
Ive uninstalled/reinstalled several times now, no change, no recording tab.
Have updated driver after reinstall.
Have tried different brand disks, no change.
System restore doesnt go back far enough.
Have also tried multiple (well, two or three) reg edits found while googling this issue, but nothing seems to bring back the recording tab to "enable recording on this device". So, again, wondering as last resort what you mean by "remove nero InCD". Is that a codec or driver in Nero? Thanks again,Techdunce Smile

Just a quick edit: When googling this issue, lots of people seem to have had the same problem caused by Roxio, I used to have that on this machine but upgraded from xp home to pro, without ever reinstalling Roxio, just to eliminate that possibility.Techdunce Smile

InCD is the applet from Nero that enables you to use re-writable CD's just like you would a floppy disk. It's a program....not a driver.

It installed by default on older versions of Nero and I always had to disable it.
You may not even have it, but if you do, it can cause you all sorts of little problems. So check your running programs to see if its running.

Cheers mate!

Hello Doc, no sign of InCD in taskmanager, using Nero 6. As a side note, cant really put my finger on when exactly this started, as mentioned, system restore doesnt go back far enough, however, I do keep the machine "Ghosted" quite regular, and could start going back through them, but will lose some software I got free (legally) on giveawayoftheday.com. Its not an emergency,as I can burn "data" disks with Nero, but a bit slower, and its just bugging the hell out of me.Thanks again, Techdunce Smile
p.s. Is there anywhere else I should look for InCD? Have looked in msconfig/startup too.

Hello,

Does reading normal CDs work, or are there problems with accessing them as well?

Hello Goretsky, and yes,I can read cd`s normally. Yesterday, partly in hope, and partly just to see if I could, I performed a sfc, copying the i386 files from the install cd to c: drive. This worked without a hitch, and I think I can guess where your going, it does suggest that windows sees the cd drive as read only, not allowing any copying to blank disc, and it was marked as read only in the registry eg:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\cdburning\drives\volume

Drive type was marked as 1, but have edited that to 2, which as far as I can tell, should tell windows its a RW drive?
But still no recording tab.
If Im leaving any useful information out let me know. Have also uninstalled any software that might have changed settings, but I think if something did that during install, then uninstalling it probably wouldnt work without manually tracing it?
Thanks again,Techdunce Smile

Hello,

Have you tried removing the UpperFilters and LowerFilters entry in the registry per Microsoft Knowledgebase article 270008, Cannot Access CD-ROM and "Code 31" Error Message in Device Manager Aft...You Rem? Although you are not having the exact problem mentioned in the knowledgebase article, the behavior is somewhat similar, and trying the recommended fix might solve the problem.

Hello, and thanks again for the reply. The filters were already removed, as I gave this a try before posting this issue.

http://forums.techguy.org/multimedia/499636-solved-cd-dvd-record-problem.html

(The tweak is a couple of posts down on the linked thread)

I may be wrong, but am pretty sure Ive got through most of the obvious fixes, and some of the not so obvious too, but still no recording tab Sad

Hi Techdunce,
You might try download and install Nero updates for Nero 6
if you have not done so. Might help, cannot harm. Links should be in
Nero, along with upgrade offers.
I believe M$ used Roxio as basis for XP cd write, so pc will have
some Roxio components installed. Should not be an issue.
Best wishes, zzron
PS: How is your bios battery?

Hello Zzron, thanks for the input. CMOS battery is fine, as is everything else, except that windows just doesnt see my cd/dvd drive as a RW. I didnt know m$ used Roxio as a basis for their own recorder, so with that in mind, I may trawl through their forums and see if there is a patch or something,(backup first of course Idea ).Thanks again, Techdunce Smile

Hello,

Does the problem occur if you login to the computer as a different user?

Hello again, and yes, I logged in using the Administrator account, (pressing ctrl+alt+del at the welcome screen) same deal Sad , no recording tab, also created a new account, and, yes, you guessed it, the same result Sad . One thing of note, when going back through the registry to double check settings, there is a slight difference to whats in my registry, and the keys listed in MS support, and other resources. This is whats supposed to be there

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives, under Drives, there should be a subkey called
Volume{GUIDxxxxxxxxxxxxxx}

However, in my registry key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives
The subkey is "Volumes{dafcbf9xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx}
(Using the X`s for convenience)Will post exact values if it would do any good.

The difference here is slight, I admit, but maybe worth mentioning, Thanks again, Techdunce Smile
