| OK, it's been interesting running WIN7, but I need to get some work done. How do I get back to XP? Can I just reinstall it or do I have to wipe the hard drive?

| Sorry if this comes across as being sarcastic but did you follow any of the suggestions in this thread that you started?

Well, yes. That does sound a little sarcastic, but deserved I guess. To answer your question I bought a new harddrive and before I got it installed my brother in law's computer had a hard drive fail so I put it in that. That meant Windows 7 went on my main hard drive.
I've since found information that I will probably have to reformat to reinstall XP unless Doc or some of the rest of you on this board has an alternative.
Thanks for the post, I guess.

Yeah, I would have to say that since you weren't able to put it on a separate drive or partition then you have to do a clean install. Unless you had a recent back up somewhere.
Brother-in-law? Tsk, tsk. They only difference between in-laws and outlaws is outlaws are wanted. |

Well I have a backup of C and D drives on an external drive, but I doubt that anything in Windows is going to be a simple syncing of the drives.
The BIL is a good guy, just a little clueless where computers are concerned. I couldn't stand to see him without his golf game.

If you have a backup of C: , , , I'm assuming it's XP, then just restore it. Job done.
A restore of an image file will overwrite everything on the drive.
There's no need to fuss with it any further.
I have Vista 64 on one hard drive and Win-7, build 7048 on another.
I'll just reformat both drives to wipe out the stuff on them and then use then for something else.
One, at least, is going to wind up a Storage (backup) drive, mostly for Ghost Images, so it will be reformatted FAT-32.

Doc,
I'm not sure what kind of backup I have. It is one produced by the program Good Sync which sync's my backup drive with my main hard drive. Whether that produces an image I'm not sure.
I guess I will go ahead and try to sync C drive with the backup drive. The worst that will happen is that I'll have to format the drive if it doesn't work.

| Good sync does not produce an image of your windows. It only backups files. |

OH Yukkkkk!
With all the conversations we've had on this very forum about backing up your C: drive with Ghost or Acronis True Image, I'm flabbergasted, that anyone has any problem with restoring their HD.
Everyone reading this forum, should by now have a recent backup of their C: drive on either a DVD (s) or external hard drive.
If not, this would be a very good time to start, making regular, periodic, backups using whatever program you can get your hands on.
Symantec recently began giving away Ghost 11.5 for FREE.
Also, there's Acronis True Image, available for FREE to users of Maxtor or Seagate drives. It comes on the setup disk with boxed drives and can be downloaded for FREE from the manufacturers web sites.
You download the program, install it on your PC and then use it to make yourself a bootable Recovery CD. Then you can delete the program OFF of your HD, to save valuable space and eliminate HD bloat.
Western Digital users, you're out of luck on the above programs. They only work on the drive they come with.
Good Luck,
The Doctor
PS: Doesn't anyone read my signature line?
That little graphic, is now 12 years old, taken from the original Ghost web site. |

Well Doc, consider. The average home user only changes OS's every four or five years. You do it every day or so. I can't use that as an excuse because I'm always fooling with my system.
I did buy Partition Magic and I've downloaded the free MaxBlast which now contains Acronis so maybe after 24 years of fooling with computers I'll change my ways. Anyone want to take bets on that?

Side bets? You won't lure me into that one!!!
Backing up your hard drive should be as basic to anyone as knowledgeable as yourself, as changing the oil in your car.
Never, but NEVER, load a beta or even RC1 version of any OS over the top of your main HD.
Always, use another hard drive for testing new OS's.
That's the best way to 100% preserve your main OS and all your data files.
I have three HD's in my own system.....one for my main OS and two more for backups and OS testing.
Well, I do wish you good luck.
