| According to the folks at Merriam-Webster, blog was the word of the year for 2004, based on online lookups. One has to wonder; does this speak to the popularity of the format, or simple curiousity among those to whom the term is not familiar?

| Both I'm sure. And blatant misuse by people who have no idea what it means. ex: "This weekend we flooded our outboard motor and for a while there it kept going blog blog blog."

Hello,
Google's Zeitgeist page provides a similar listing of popular search terms.

| At least no one is saying "Smoking Gun" anymore. If I hear some evening news person say that again, I'm gonna smash my TV set. Grrr. |

I vote for curiousity. If blog is short for weblog shouldn't it be "wog"? Blog just makes no sense.
I don't watch network news but I assume that they explained it all after Rathergate.
Since killahgrag has opened this up to generally overused phrases - if I hear "in harm's way" one more time I'm going to personally put the speaker in harm's way. |

| "wog" makes more sense when you read "web log" but say web blog out loud 7 or eight times and "blog" makes sense. |

Hello,
The term "wog" may be considered offensive by some.

I said weblog out loud several times and it didn't seem to be a tongue twister.
PC seems like a much better reason to adopt a term. Do we still use master/slave when referring to memory devices?
I'd like to put the people who think "wog" is derogatory in harm's way. |

| I don't consider web log to be a tongue twister either but when you say it out loud (or at least when most people I know say it out loud) the distinction between web and log gets lost. Sorta like when kids figure out that "It's not" sounds like "it's snot". |

"When you wake up and it's sunny...
...if your nose is kinda runny...
...you may think it's kind of funny...
...but it's not!"
Thanks tiredmother, I almost forgot about that!!
On "weblog": The phrase is too long, too many syllables. We reduce everything to acronyms now, there is no time to talk, but plenty of time to type, we need all the shortcuts we can get.
...so I'm all for the use of "blog", it fits better into a a sentence when being used as a verb:
"I have to blog this."
"Don't bother me, I'm blogging."
"Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to blog I go."
Whereas "weblog" sounds WAY to geeky.
"Pardon me sir, do you mind if I weblog this exchange?"
"Yes mother, I will do the dishes once I complete my weblog."
"Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to weblog I go."
See? |
