| It's funny that so many people I know refuse to use Linux because they think it requires special tweaking to get it working right (most new distributions require little or no tinkering), and yet it appears that Vista requires a lot more hacking & tweaking to make it workable.

You said a mouthful there Brother!
It takes me about two hours +, to cleanup, setup and tweak a new PC with Vista on it. Even after all that, it's still a BEAST!
Vista falls into the category of something that should be "Recalled" by the manufacturer.
XP was debugged, updated, tweaked and running like a champ.
We certainly didn't need a new OS, especially a huge resource hog like Vista.
I have Vista on a second HD and after a week or more, there are still unresolved problems with it.
It absolutely refuses to make a dial up connection, saying that I have NO modem installed, all the while the Hardware Manager is seeing the modem and telling me it's working correctly. Go Figure,,,, one half of Vista doesn't know what the other half is doing. What a mess!
Cheers Mate!

One of the most valuable things I found on that website was a batch file to set all Services back to Default.
I used that today and got all my games back again. ???
Also, I installed a new PCTel modem in the system and Vista installed the drivers for it and then the Dial Up connection that I had tried in vain to create, popped up like a mushroom! It even works.
So right now, I've got all systems working again.
Time for a beer!
Cheers Mates!

Hello,
I use both Microsoft Windows Vista and Linux systems daily, although the latter mostly as an end-user (as opposed to an administrator) now, but I really think the amount of tweaking required for either operating system is more an issue of what the specific requirements are for the computer, not what operating system it runs. One could easily have a system running some version of Microsoft Windows that works "right out of the box" and another computer running a distribution of Linux that required a lengthy configuration process.

Most users who buy a Windows XP/Vista system won't be doing any tweaking, because they are just users. And Vista will work well enough out of the box for them. Most Vista installations seem to be supplied with the machine, not even put on by the users. WORD will run on it. The internet will run etc A minority will be tinkerers, who will need to tweak the system
Most Linux users are still tinkerers. So of course they'll all tweak it. Only a minority will choose it to use out of the box. |

I like analogies..... they help people to understand things better.
I like to compare Vista to a Cadillac Sedan DeVille with every option imaginable. We're talking heated seats, GPS, Satellite Radio, Electric Sun Roof, Cruise control with radar, dual heat zones, the whole nine yards.
But this fabulous car only has a 4 cylinder engine. It will only run about 50 mph tops!
The problem isn't the 4 cyl engine. The problem is the weight of that huge car. It just overloads that little engine and won't let it run up to its full potential.
Lets call that heavy car, in my analogy, "System Bloat".
It's Vista with all its add-ons.
XP was somewhat bloated with all the Services it comes with. pre-loaded and constantly running.
(many of which, can just be disabled)
Vista is much worse.
I take a brand new (Vista) PC, right out of the box, and by shutting things down that don't need to be running, and de-installing all the junk programs that come pre-installed and shutting off the UAC and tweaking the registry for improved performance, I almost double the overall performance of that new PC.
Decrease the workload on the CPU by 50% and you've effectively doubled the performance.
