*From slashdot:
Quote:
Microsoft has published the due date for Windows XP SP3 (Service Pack 3) on its Windows Lifecycle Web site. The preliminary due date (the latter half of 2007) for the next collection of fixes and patches for Microsoft's desktop operating system is more than a year later than many company watchers were expecting...

*Windows Lifecycle Website states:
Quote:
... SP3 for Windows XP is currently planned for 2H 2007 {"2H"=Second Half}. This date is preliminary.
It is being said that WindowsVista will be released this year, which is much much earlier than the date (2H 2007) planned for WinXP SP3.

*As of 03/14/2006; the following information was extracted from RedmondTimes:
Quote:
Vista release date: November 2006; {which} was thought to be the date of releasing Windows Vista for a long time, but only now it was confirmed. Greg Randall is now getting traffic towards his blog, since he confirmed that the month when Windows Vista will be released is indeed November 2006: This is the year… the year that Microsoft releases the newest version of Windows. Yes, Vista will be released in November of this year...

In the interim, I will stop holding my breath and start saving my pennies!! Cool

Something's up. NeoWin.net announced that a new CTP build of Vista will be released shortly (and is out of character for the periodic releases that they've been doing).

Does the phrase "whistling Dixie" come to mind over all these pre-lim release dates Question

To me Win XP users should be looked after before/at same time as Vista is released. Sounds like they're hoping that a lot of users will trade up to Vista before release of SP3.

I've got Vista running on my P4 3.0 gHz system w/2 gB of RAM, 2 W-D Raptor hard drives and an eVGA FX 7800 vid card (AGP).

Vista rates the system as a 3! And here I thought I was doing pretty good with what I had!

So, Vista's hardware requirements will, in most cases, require a new PC to run effectively.

But the plus side is (IMO) that Vista will be much easier to operate and maintain than XP currently is. I've managed to crash the beta a few times - and usually there's some info presented that points to the problem. I've only blue screened it once (STOP 0x9f) - but I suspect that it's due to the nVidia beta drivers rather than the built in Vista drivers.

I agree. SP5 for Windows 2000 was delay so much in hopes people would just give up. And it worked. There will be no sp5. I suspect there will never be a SP3 for Xp either. They don't want to maintain it. They want you to buy vista and the new computers you'll need to run it on. Microsoft is getting LOTS of pressure to get vista out the door and the OEM vendors are very angry at Microsoft for ruining this Christmas season for them.
