| That article is dated November 10, 2008 and based on milestone 3. I'm curious to hear their spin on Windows 7 now considering that the public beta was released last month.

I can give you my "spin" on it since I am running it.
It was easier and quicker to install than any Windows I have used. It picked up my home network on it's own once I found the place to change the name of the workgroup.
It is slower than XP in almost all operations. For my email chess program I have to make three window changes between the email and the chessboard.
If left without an operation taking place for any length of time it will lock up with a black screen and using the NMI (Nonmaskable interrupt button) to reboot gives first a screen of hundreds of flashing squares and then a screen of narrow vertical lines and is still locked up. It's necessary to remove power completely for several seconds in order to reboot.
Comparing it to XP (I did not purchase Vista) it is slower and more hoops to jump through to get done what you wish to do. I plan to run it for at least another week brfore reinstalling XP. So far I can see no reason to replace XP with this. It is, however, a beta. Maybe it will improve. If not, I fear for Microsoft's solvency.

Hello,
What sort of hardware are you testing on? I have only played with Microsoft Windows 7 a little, but I did not see any lockups like you experienced when I have left it running for several days--the computer it was on went to sleep, and then it woke up okay when I went back to it.

Goretsky,
Sorry to reply so late. I had thought this thread had run out. I'm running an Asus motherboard M3A with an AMD Phenom 9500 processor. 2 SATA drives and 4 GB of memory. And you could be right. The motherboard was a little flaky when running XP but not nearly this bad. Could be a problem with the motherboard that the beta is exacerbating. For a fair test I should put it on my other computer, but it is older and may not be up to minimum for Win7 and my wife won't let me touch her machine.

Hello,
Have you tried running a program like MemTest86+ overnight on the system to see if any errors are found?

MS is posting (or "Leaking" ) versions of Win-7 faster than they change their socks.
I'm testing build 7048 and other than NO email client, it runs faster on my AMD 2X, dual core, 5200+, 64 bit, processor than my XP-Pro-SP3 on the same PC.
Having 4 Gig's of DDR2, 800mhz RAM and a SATA2 HD doesn't hurt either.
I hardly had this ver. set up and running the way I want it, than there was a newer version.
So if you're trying to properly evaluate Windows 7, you need to be running the very latest version. Or at least close.
Today, April 14, the latest ver seems to be 7077.
For someone who really wants to keep up with what's going on with Win-7, they should be reading the Windows7 Forum.
http://www.sevenforums.com/
I already signed up on that forum and I'm learning a lot.
For instance, I found the "Take Ownership" script there, which I now find invaluable for making changes to files and folders in XP, Vista and Win7.
I also found the FIX for the email client in Win7 that's disabled. I cleaned out the WinMail folder and replaced it with the files from Windows Mail in Vista.
Now I have my MS email program, similar to Outlook Express, in Windows 7.
I have also found that Win7 is so close to Vista, that all my Vista setup tweaks work the same on Win7 as on Vista and greatly increase the performance.
So again, I suggest that anyone interested in testing Windows 7, read that forum.
Only a suggestion.
