OK, I got my Vista DVD and after backing up my entire C: drive, I decided to give Vista a try.

Well, first off it refused to install on my HD untill I converted it to NTFS.
After converting C: to NTFS, I tried installing Vista again.
It happened but took a very long time.
I found that everything it did on the new NTFS drive took twice as long as it had on my old FAT-32 drive. I really got tired of WAITING for things to come up.

It demanded that I Uninstall AVG and Windows Defender.
OK....I could live with that....but it left me without any AV protection.

Then I had to replace my modem.
Even after replacing the modem, setting up the dial up service was hairy to say the least and I never could get a shortcut to it on my desktop.
Then logging into the internet was not automatic, like it should be, when opening O.E. It opened two dialup windows and I was forced to click on "Connect" every time.

Login was another thing all together.
I got a login error every time I booted up and had to type in my name every time. I hate it when that happens. Evil or Very Mad

There were more problems, almost too numerous to mention.

I'm wondering here, if anyone else has installed Vista and what kind of problems you may have had with it.

For now, Vista resides only in a Ghost Image on my Backup drive.
I've restored my Windows XP and am back in full control of my PC.

Thank You, Ghost, for saving my bacon once again!
(Fortunately, it saves the 'File Structure' along with the files.)

You should have installed it on a separate drive or at least a separate partition. Vista will not run on FAT32 and as an added bit of info if you ever do get Vista installed Ghost will not install in it.

More Info is available here LINK

Please re-read my post....

I plainly said that I had to CONVERT my FAT-32 file structure to NTFS before I installed Vista. Just on my C: partition though.

Ghost backed up Vista and its NTFS file structure just fine when I decided to flush it and go back to XP and my old FAT-32 structure.
Whether Ghost will install into Vista or not is totally immaterial.
Installing it on a HD is completely redundant. I always run it from my custom boot disk. (floppy or CD)
Partition Magic 8 is one more program NOT compatible with Vista.

One day, when I feel like a little self punishment, I'll restore Vista again and futz with it some more. Wink

I may just restore it to a separate HD when I get one large enough to accomodate it. Maybe next month....

Actually it states that Ghost 10 does not work, but that's not the version that Shadow uses anyway. It just states that it does not work, not any other details than that so it could just be the version or a glitch, but it does not give details like whether it'll work via a cd as he uses it.

You do not have to convert any partition to NTFS except the partition you are installing Vista on. Partition Magic 8.0 is compatible as that is what I used to partition my SATA HD that is now running Vista 5384 and prior to that ran 5308.

I do not make it a practice to remember what version of any program someone uses. All he said was Ghost.

Hello,

With older (pre-Beta 2) builds of Microsoft Windows Vista I had trouble with SCSI, sound and video drivers at various times. It installed just fine on a test PC at work: A fairly plain i845G-based motherboard with video, sound and PATA on board. It has a 64MB MX440 AGP video card installed as well, which worked out of the box. We should have some actual test PCs which meet the specs for Ultimate, Business and Home editions soon, at which point we'll try installing the various versions on their respective test PCs.

I haven't installed Windows Vista beta 2 yet on my test PC at home, which is a P4 2.80Ghz with 1GB RAM, LSI Logic and Adaptec SCSI controllers, a Creative Audigy sound card and nVidia 6800GT AGP video card. I am hoping installation will go smoothly and devices have their drivers loaded automatically.

The one thing I have noted on all builds is that networking has worked flawlessly and fantastically--I also seemed to be getting better throughput under Windows Vista then with the same network hardware under Microsoft Windows XP, which I take as evidence of some "under the hood" changes to networking in Windows Vista.

Regards,

I think one of shadows problems is that he performed an upgrade rather then a fresh install. No version of Windows runs well as an upgrade, to expect a bug ridden beta to do that is pushing it.

In Build 5308 I had problems with the sound. It recognized the sound board but the sound was terrible. In 5384 this is not a problem. I would expect that 5384 will install flawlessly on your home test PC ,Aryeh .

I don't know why, with all the super intelligence in this room, that it's so hard to Understand what I'm saying, when I say it in the plainest English that I can muster.

I NEVER install Ghost into Windows. Period. That's just a tremendous waste of good hard drive space.

I only use the Ghost.exe file on a boot disk. After all, that's what does the work....NOT the GUI.
It's totally oblivious to the OS. To Ghost, it's nothing but a series of one's and Zero's on the surface of the Hard Drive.
It's a bit copier, in that it only copies bits.
Then like copying a picture, it incorporates an exemplary compression algorythm to attain a considerable rate of compression and save much space in the resulting Image file. You can select either Fast or High compression.

Ghost copied my install of Vista just as easily as it would 98, ME or XP.
It also copies a NTFS partition as easily as a FAT-32 partition.

When I restored my copy of Windows XP, it restored my FAT-32 file structure right along with it. (Thank God and those little grey guys at Ghostsoft, Inc.) Twisted Evil

That's it. I'm done. I'm not explaining it again.
