I just recently upgraded my Compaq EVO n600c laptop to Vista Business. Unfortunately the audio does not work. In device manager there is a yellow warning in the audio section. In control panel under audio, it states no device driver found. The laptop uses an "ESS allegro" audio driver in which I have not been able to find a work around. I have searched the Net and have loaded everything related to ESS and Compaq laptops without success. Any advise?

There aren't drivers for every piece of hardware out there. You have to decide if you want to keep Vista and do without sound or return to XP Pro and have sound.

Even HP's support page doesn't list Vista as a choice for the OS

Thx. Glad I installed Vista on a 2nd laptop drive. I'll return to XP Pro drive and use my Vista drive as backup...

Hello,

RadarSync's VistaDrivers site has two device driver packages linked to for supporting ESS Allegro sound card chipsets under Microsoft Windows Vista. Perhaps one of them will work with the Hewlett-Packard (Compaq) EVO n600c notebook computer.

Aryeh, thanks for the link to a site I was unaware of.

Since I had two HP computers, I usually go to HP's site to grab my drivers. Obviously HP can't keep up to date on drivers for every model of HP/Compaq computer manufactured, it's good to have another resource.

There are going to be countless pieces of hardware for which Vista drivers will NEVER be written. Those folks wanting to upgrade their old PC's to Vista are just going to have to live with that fact, or stay with an OS that works with their hardware.

Doing some homework to see if Vista drivers are available for your hardware BEFORE you invest in Vista, would be good advise to anyone.
Even M$ strongly suggests doing that very thing.

I've got a pretty "up to date" system here (my main PC) but when I installed Vista Ultimate 32 bit version, it didn't like about half of my hardware. That install didn't last out the day. It's now only a bad memory. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Cheers!

I had the same problem.Have just installed Vista Ultimate on N600C , luckily I have found an audio driver that works with Vista .It wasn't easy , had to make about 3 attempts to install it , then when I restarted, it didn't appear to work.I disabled the ESS allegro in device manager and then re-enabled it and it worked ! The driver is SP17163 for Windows 2000 and 98 SE .Go to hp.com and type in sp17163 in the search box and it should come up.Good luck , hope it works for you !

Referring to my previous post, everytime I restart my computer, the diver doesn't work , but if I go to device manager and disable it, then enable it , it will work again.

Hello,

The ESS Allegro audio drivers downloadable via the Hewlett-Packard (Compaq) SP17163 SoftPaq are actually for Microsoft Windows 98 and Windows 2000. You might have better luck with the SP15773 SoftPaq, which contains the ESS Allegro drivers for Microsoft Windows XP.
