Hi: I'm having a series of problems and I'm pretty sure they're caused by the virus/viruses on my hard drive. First, I'm having a google hijacking issue. If I run a search on google the results are displayed and when I click on the link I'm redirected to other sites. Every so often I get this popup from my system tray that says that my computer is infected with viruses and that I should purchase the latest spyware removal software to deal with it (I haven't ever went to that). My computer is running alot slower than usual and I think that a lot more hard disk space is being listed as used than I've actually put stuff on. Finally, my antiviruses haven't been working. I can't run malwarebytes (a program I used to get rid of antivirus xp a while back - I think this might be antivirus xp again because the symptoms are all similar), so I tried to reinstall it and it doesn't even let the installshield or their website load. I tried to load spybot but it didn't open at first but I managed to open it through windows explorer. I can't update spybot. And I have AVP (Antivirus Personal) and it hasn't been able to eradicate this infection. Any ideas on what to do?

Here's my logfile:

Welcome to Lockergnome.

Do you know what this file is for --> C:\malign.exe

Please print the below instructions or copy them to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the order mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Download Malwarebytes ' Anti-Malware at http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe or http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full Scan, then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart (see Extra Note below).
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy & paste the entire report into your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you checked the last one:

O4 - Startup: Sonic INSTALLit! Setup.lnk = C:\Documents and Settings\Talha\Local Settings\Temp\VIES2308\Setup.exe
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: karna.dat

Locate the following Files/Folders and delete them if they exist (if no location given, just do a search for them):

C:\Windows\system32\karna.dat

1. Download combofix at http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe or http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe Save it to your Desktop before you run it.
2. Double-click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not click on combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Hi: Thanks for your advice. Whenever I go to any of the links to the sites you posted it says page not found and I downloaded the installation files to another computer (the sites opened up fine on another comp) and tried to access the installshield for those programs on my infected computer and nothing would show up after double clicking the icon even though it took it to installshield on the other comp. Not sure how to proceed from here. I took your advice and deleted karna and sonic entries... Where do I go from here?

Hi, an update: So I downloaded and installed both Combofix and Malwarebytes onto a USB (I had to download it from another computer because my infected laptop doesn't let me go to those sites). Whenever I plug my usb into my infected laptop and try to click on the combofix icon, the program doesn't come up even thoguh when I ctrl+alt+del and go to active tasks it shows combofix.exe as being active. The same thing with malwarebytes. Is it likely the virus is doing this? Is there any way to overcome this, because if I'm able to run malwarebytes it will clear the infection, it's cleared a very similar infection before. Is there any way to start up the computer in a mode where only the bare minimum startups activate and then I'm able to run malwarebytes and combofix? Are there any other ideas on how to proceed?

Try not to run ComboFix directly from the USB flash drive. Copy it to your desktop before running. If it still won't run, try renaming it to CFTAI786.exe instead and then run it again.

You can try going to Safe Mode (if you don't know how, go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=61 ) to see if those programs will install properly.
