| Have you first tried to restore the computer before you did all of this?
I always either create a restore point (XP) or create an image (2K) before I make a hardware or a major software change.

no system restore points found.
they were wiped.
how do i get the ms pci, nic controler and the intel usb controlers back in the system i can't copy them from another computer can I ?
every dadblame site i found them at on line and or search for them online including ms downloads takes me to places that want to load that driver detective program that finds all the ones out dated but they won't load them unless i pay for them again. and pay for the dangblasted program that found they were missing and told me that when i already know they are missing. |

What wiped the System Restore Points?
That would be my first question.
That's always your first line of defense in case of windows problems.
Then read my signature line....... again.

| Assuming there isn't some hidden "boogieman" (like a virus) associated with any of your troubles, my suggestion would be a repair install. This SHOULD put back the things that are missing & leave alone the stuff that is there. Of course you'll want to make sure of your backups before starting. |

Hello,
If you go into the Device Manager, delete the USB devices and reboot, they should be automatically re-detected and added to the operating system's hardware profile. You may wish to re-enable Restore Points and make one before doing this, though.
If that does not work, you should be able to download the latest Intel Software Chipset Installation utility package from Intel's support web site and run it in order to re-install USB support.
Regards,

Try goretsky suggestion first & use mine as a last resort, as if you do it wrong, you can wipe out everything. Especially since you asked how, I believe you have never done this or seen it done.
But to answer your question on how:
After ensuring you have proper backups, put the OS CD in as if you were doing a regular install - choose to setup windows, do NOT choose repair with recovery console - select your installation you wish to repair & press R to repair - if the repair option is not present, STOP & exit, as any further action may wipe your data.
Here is a link that further details all this:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
Just scroll through it to find the info...

I'd rather take a trip down Pikes Peak with my brakes disconnected as run a PC today with the System Restore shut down.
System Restore is probably the most valuable thing ever given to us by MS, to handle those occasional "Awshitz" that are bound to come along for those people who insist on FUTZING with their PC's.
I rely so much on System Restore to keep me out of hot water, that I even run a little script from my Startup folder to force a new restore point every time I boot up my system.
That may be several Restore Points a day, but I really don't give a crap!
I can manually delete them any time I want and I DO delete them by batch file on my Ghost boot disk, when I do a Ghost Backup.
Y'all have a great day now, Y'hear?

no go yet but i have not tried the suggestion by baby tux yet.
umm? was that you doc who that said to remove restore points just two years ago? or was that the shadow that said that?
but i most the time have it on. and could have sworn it was on the day it messed up. but it was not. and i don't remember turning it off, but i must have? still i most the time turn it off then clean the system and all that then turn it back on and reboot several times to make a new set.
so why it was off i don't know?
still i'm at no usb hub controllers yet. i found them on cnet downloads. so i clicked the link. it took me to windows downloads. then i clicked the link i got at the windows download site and it took me back to the same cnet page? what the crap is a run around link doing on microsoft's site.?
i've got these other two computers and i thought how stupid of me i'll just copy them from one of those computers and replace them on this one.
the other computer cant find them either? but it does not have anything that uses them come to think of it cause its an amd cpu not intel. umm? the other computer is a lenovo set up i changed to use xp pro. yes it has intel inside. but would lenovo have messed up those usb controllers?
if that dont work i'm going to have to try overwriting the windows folders. but i'll have to back up my other folders in there first so i dont lose my msagents and stuff. |

fixed the error.
I UNPLUGED THE DAMAGED JUNK.
would not fix by removal of the item in device manager.
would not over install from cdrom would not download from ms would not download from dell would not stay plugged in to the wall did not keep keyboard and mouse connected did not keep speakers and monitor connected. only pluged in to wall now to keep the bios bat working.
will figure how to get it working with minimun stuff just to get my files off it
and on this new one i replaced that other with.
but that fixed the dollgonething now didn't it.
