The online component for Uru was "put to sleep" hopefully it will wake back up in the not too distant future. However Cyan will be publishing expansion packs and the first one will be free. Ones afterward will be comparable to expansion packs for other games.

I heard Urulive (online component) has been totally cancelled...
@josh15: there is no need to play myst, riven etc. before playing uru.
uru has a standalone story (with reminds to the older game-stories but with no relevance for playing uru successfully).

Well, maybe and maybe not. They are keeping their options open but to stay above water they need to sell the content they do have in offline expansion packs. It was weird they closed live down now. because so many were waiting until Live as officially open and some of the bugs at been worked out. Some of us beta testers were telling other fans, family and friends not to sign up yet because it wasn't ready but the canceled it before it was given a fair chance.

I didn't tell people not to sign up because I hated the game I just wanted them to wait so they could have a good initial experience. I know some good people (friends from the fan community) working at Ubisoft but it appears the company has a serious breakdown of communication somewhere.

I have nothing but respect for Cyan (the creators of the game) and their vision. I think they may be a little ahead of their time. I am looking forward to the expansion packs and they will be more convient for my lifestyle but I have a feeling Uru Live will be back within the year.

The expansion packs will not only reach a larger non-broadband audience but Cyan is also actively working on a Mac version of the game now and a lot of Myst fans are Mac users. I use both platforms (My laptop is a Mac, desktop is a Dell 8200) so that's exciting.

I'm still looking forward to things I haven't seen that were hidden in realMyst eggs and shown in early screen shots.

It's a real shame the way Uru live (prologue) was handled. Firstly, it only lasted about a month. A very pleasant month but also a very short month. Bugs and glitches abounded and tech support was, well, spotty. Then almost at the very end they announced that they hadn't worked on it for 4 weeks. As I posted in another forum, apparently they had to push a diamond in the rough out the door prematurely in order to stay afloat.
The game itself is nothing short of spectacular. Real time rendered 3d and haunting music really captured the player. As linkerjpatrick said, many of us fully expect it to return within a year. I'll post a link here for you to visit. You'll read a lot of negative posting by people who think Ubi and Cyan "owe" them something. Go there with an open mind and learn what Uru's all about.
Tell 'em Worren sent 'ya.

Uru the prime is a great game, lovely graphics, good puzzles, great game engine. No bugs, no glitches but you need a powerful computer because all the rendering takes place in your machine.

Uru Live had a lot of problems, most of them were created because some people used dial up and others cable or DSL. The servers were not segregated and all had to wait for the slowest. Even that would not have alienated the users because of UL being so much fun.

I think that:

a. Uru Live was not promoted well enough
b. It was opened too soon to the public
c. There was not enough time to given it to succeed
d. I believe that UbiSoft has serious internal problems that need to be
solved
e. I believe that UruLife could be a tremendous money maker given time
f. There were not enough servers to make it a success
g. I hope that they will revive it at some future time
