I have 84 updates to perform on my laptop.

I sent it to my uncle whos an IT because my CD driver stopped working. He said he updated it with no problems, but since he lives across the country... but now anytime i try to turn off the laptop it tries to update it, but it always says "updating 1 (out of 84) updates..." and it changes to that other part that says "dont turn off the computer, it will turn off automatically" and it switches between the two and never really updates. it just shuts off after about 10 minutes.

I've tried doing the custom update, and only picked to do 10 at a time, and it still failed...

How do i fix this?

Allo User Smile

Are you trying to update from that little 'Windows UPDATE Notice', that appears in the System Tray?

If yes, try visiting the MS Windows Update Site itself (Start Menu - Windows Update), and let that scan and install the updates. I've never managed t get that stoopid shield thing to work properly

Hello,

What happens if you try performing just a single update, or try to download one of the updates and perform a manual installation of it?

Hello,

Did you try downloading the update to your computer and then running it from there, as opposed to selecting to install it from the Windows Update web site?

If you try the link I provided above you WILL fix your update problem if you are having a problem with M$ updates.

A while back I had the same problem & I got the link from the geeks forum, and like magic it took care of everything. My understanding was that your registry shows you have updated so you will NOT be able to redo an update. This link some how changes your registry & allows you to update. Give it a try.

I have done only one Update on my W2K machine. IMHO they are a waste of time. Plus, you can get the SP3 executable which is alleged to include ALL the updates in SP1, SP2 and more. I have run this on only one machine, took about 45 min and didn't hiccup once. We are reading about the incompatibility issue with Norton; so what? Anybody still trying to use Norton is need of a wakeup call; Norton is invasive, resource-hogging, intrusive CRAPWARE to be avoided at all costs! Anybody who is unaware of this is simply not paying attention. The only thing of any use from Norton/Symantec these days is the Norton Removal Tool.

Dang! I thought I was the only one left who thought like that about Norton and had the cahones to say so. Rolling Eyes
Every time I've said what needed to be said about Norton, I get bad-mouthed for it.
Three cheers for "Hamhox"!!!! Cheer! Cheer! Cheer!

And, "OH HAIL YES" the problems between Norton AV and Windows XP's SP3 are well documented all over the internet. I first read about it in the "Windows Secrets" newsletter, which I almost reprinted here, but figured I'd get blasted for that too.

Why ever pay for AV software from Norton, when one of the worlds best AV programs (AVG 8.0 FREE) is absolutely FREE for home use?
Did I mention it's FREE? Wink

And unlike so many other, so called FREE AV programs, AVG updates every day automatically and will even do a background scan daily, if you let it, and there is NO registration to go thru or keys to download and then have to renew in a few months. That activity is totally unacceptable to old folks who know nothing about computers in the first place and don't want to be bothered renewing a license. They just want to do email with their kids and grandkids and maybe play some solitaire.

With all the horror stories from people who have had MS Updates go sour on them, I'm surprised that there's still anyone willing to go through that swamp, filled with bugs, snakes and gators. I've had my auto-updates shut down for a very long time now.

My contention is that if your PC was running OK yesterday, then by dang it should run ok today, tomorrow and next week, month, year, etc.,,,,,,
without any updates from MS.

SP3 should be almost a NON-Event, IF, a person does all the necessary cleanup, chkdsk and defrag before starting the Upgrade.
On my "HAL 9000" it only took six minutes to complete.

Microsoft built all the necessary programs into Windows, to prepare the Hard Drive for a Microsoft Update.

"Disk Cleanup" will get rid of most of the junk, , , Chkdsk can check the Hard Drive for errors and even repair most of them and "Defrag" can reorganize and defragment the hard drive for greater efficiency.

The age-old instructions for installing any new software have always included "Shut Down All Running Programs, before Continuing".

People get into all sorts of trouble when they ignore that simple admonishment and try to install new software or a MS Update with their AV/AS software running and/or a browser open.

I have used a simple little utility program to shut down all running programs before doing any program install, drive maintenance, or burning a CD/DVD. That little program is called "End It All 2".

It's available from this SITE.

When you run the program you'll see a list of all running programs.
Your AV software, for instance, will have a little yellow padlock to the left of the filename. Just right-click on the padlock and select "Allow Kill".
That will allow "End It All" to shutdown that program when you run it, by clicking the green and red double skull and crossbones in the upper tool bar. OK all the prompts to finish the program.
Then close it by clicking the X in the upper right corner of the window.

I install this little program for all my customers and I've never had any problems with anyone not being able to run it. Even my little blue haired grammas.

Cheers Mates!

Yeah, I when I look at computers in stores, guess what is loaded on them...
You got it, that NORTON VIRUS!!! (among other nasties)

And it IS a VIRUS under every definition of a virus. Biggest P.O.S. that ever hit a computer.

There I said it...Now don't we all feel better for it?

One question to round off with:

Which is worse on a PC, Norton A/V or McAffee A/V???

I know it's a toughie, but....

Anyone remember the 'good' ol' days when pretty much everyone used the term - when a computer got screwed up - that it had been 'nortoned'? Nothing changes, it seems.....'cept for the worse.

Hello all, I was flicking through a last months edition of a mag, pc pro, and came across this fix for Microsoft updates not updating, and remembered seeing this thread.

"Run each of the following commands from the command prompt in turn, gettng a "success" note after each one.(start/run and type cmd, press enter)"

regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuauengl.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll

I think it goes without saying to backup what you got before trying this fix, and its a while since "User226" last posted, but it might be handy for someone,Techdunce Smile
p.s. Apparently, this fix helped a machine missing 83 updates,so its in the ballpark of the original post.
