Hello,

Have you tried downloading and installing the Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 7 (SP7) from their web site?  If so, did that make any difference?

Just to verify, you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer as your web browser, correct?

If so, it sounds like some of the services or the files (or both) which are required for the Windows Update service to run are no longer running or registered with the system.

Let's try stopping the services, re-registering the files used and restarting the services used for Windows Update and see if that makes a difference.

Hello,
I kind of stumbled onto this thread while searching for a solution to the same problem. I tried all of the suggestions and was finally successful with this last one. Thank you very much.

Hi,

I have a Windows 2000 Server with SP4 that had the exact same problem. I copied the files listed to Notepad and then ran the script on the server... problem was solved.

Thanks Guys

Hello,

Which versions of Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer are you running?

What is the URL you are going to for accessing the Windows Update web site?

I have a similar problem but with MICROSOFT UPDATE. Windows Update works but Microsoft Update does not.

Since this thread is about Windows Update, I thought it best to start a new thread about my problem. You can read it here. Screenshots and specs are included. Thanks.

Hi everyone,

I'm having similar problems as those mentioned above. Specifically:

I'm running Windows 2000 Server. A trip to the Windows Update Website (and the selection of either Easy or Custom installation) gives me the following error:

"Files requires to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:"

Of course, I choose to register or reinstall the files. The registration process hangs at 43% and eventually times out.

I've tried running "regsvr32 wuauserv.dll" in the cmd prompt and I get the error "wuauserv.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. DllRegisterServer may not be exported, or a corrupt version of wuauserv.dll may be in memory. Consider using PView to detect and remove it."

I then tried copying the wuauserv.dll file from the winnt\system32 directory of a server that has functioning Windows Update capabilities, but that didn't help.

I then downloaded PView (a very cool program, by the way) and found that wuauserv.dll wasn't running. This made me a bit suspicious about the current state of BITS, so I checked -- and BITS wasn't running either! An attempt to start BITS failed (Error 1043: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion).

An attempt to follow the WUREPAIR.CMD strategy failed -- the program hung on the wuaueng.dll step.

Clearly, the Windows Update dll files and registry values are significantly screwed up. I would call Microsoft, but I don't have three hours to wait on hold for a technician who will likely not be able to help or get back to me (ever). If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Thanks,
Mike

Just to augment the previous post:

- Windows Update v6 is the version of WU that is giving me problems, and
- I'm running SP4.

Should I consider reinstalling IE altogether? Should I try reinstalling BITS?

I run 2K Pro, SP4 (I didn't install Rollup 1 yet). I had a few problems with v6 windows update but it now works on two computers. Try it again and see if it works. I sometimes think the problems are on MS's end and not with the computer you are using. If it still hangs at 43%, post back and I'll do some searching to see if anyone else has a similar situation.

I've tried installing multiple times, to no avail.

What's most distressing to me is that BITS doesn't start up properly. It leads me to believe that there's some significant issues here.

I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and waste 3 hours of my life on hold with Microsoft, I think Razz

I always gets a little confusing when secondary postings get added to the original post... even though you may have similar problems.... I dont know if you already posted this info or not... but, Have you examined you event logs ... would be handy to know what errors (if any) are being report/logged during the update procedures. Also, there should be a windowsupdate.log generated (least there is in standard windows, so assume server 2000 would log same file). Both , of these may give you some indications as to what service is not working, status of the updates,etc.... least would possible give you some error codes to look up... Or point you in the general direction.

Hello,

Have you tried deleting the WUAUSERV.DLL file from the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ directory (or wherever it is located), rebooting to let Microsoft Windows XP restore a copy from the ...\DLLCACHE\ directory and then running the script file to re-register the DLL file and trying to access the Windows Update web site? If so, did that work?

Since Windows Update was updated to V6, I encounter the following problem.

"Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:

Click option 1: Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Click option 2: Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem."

Clicking option 1 makes out like it's doing something useful, then goes back to the Windows Update screen offering Express (recommended) or Custom.  Doesn't matter which you select, it sends you back to:
"Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:"

Clicking option 2 does not send you to a place that helps you resolve the problem, it sends you to a screen where you can "SEARCH FOR YOURSELF" from scratch!  UGH

Help anyone??? :hmm:

PS: Microsuck Support is way too painful to bear!

I resolved this by upgrading to

Hi Guys,

THANKS for this post!!

FWIW I just upgraded my PC to SP2, from a legitimate copy of Win XP Pro SP1.

I got the same problem described when trying to use windows update:

"Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:

Click option 1: Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Click option 2: Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem."

I tried to troubleshoot it using all the MS recommendations - and nothing worked.

I finally tried the Aryeh Goretsky notepad file, (with some trepidation since I was using XP SP2, and not Windows 2000 Professional SP4) - and IT WORKED!!

Had to join the forum to offer my thanks, and maybe help out any other SP2 upgraders who have the same problem.

Hey there,

I'm new to this but am having this same problem with one of our computers. It is running Windows 2000 professional. I've tried the suggestions but I get an error when running the above command. The file msxml3.dll didn't exist on this computer. I copied this file from another computer but it still didn't work. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
