PostPosted: Sun Feb 21, 2010 11:10 am    Post subject: USB hub problem

I have a 4-way USB powered hub that has taken it upon itself not to rustle up every now and again on boot-up. Power LED is on but the four green LED's are out and everything connected to it doesn't show up. Sometimes disconnecting the main USB lead or the power will bring it back to life. When it's playing up, there is an exclamation mark against "generic hub" in device manager with the trouble-shooter explanation of "this device is unable to start". I have un-installed it a couple of times from device manager and let Windows find it and re-installed but, as I have another 4-way powered hub working OK from another port, I presume this is running on another instance of the same driver, so I would guess the software is OK. My leaning would be to an intermittent fault on the hub. Waddya think, folks?

If it were needed, I'd of already gone to Walmart, bought a new hub, stopped for a few beers and been back home already. Eh?

Good Luck to you!

Cool

Hello,

Perhaps the problem is not with the powered USB hub but rather the USB port it is plugged into, or the cable connecting them.

Have you tried plugging the USB hub in using a different USB port on your system or connecting it using a different cable to see if that makes any difference?

Thank you goretsky. Something a little constructive, unlike the usual feisty post from the doc. Smile
Yes, when plugged into another port (when not working), I get a list of USB devices and it shows one as not being recognised. Guess which one! Looks like it's the hub that's intermittently not being recognised by Windows. Have to dig into the pocket for a new one, by the looks of it.
Incidentally, it may be a simple thing, according to the doc, but in these troubled financial times in the UK (I assume it's the same for all you good folk across the pond), anything that results in money being saved by not having to replace kit has got to be looked at, which why I am here - to see if I've missed anything.

Sorry for being too "feisty".
But unlike you, I have to deal with stuff like that every day.

Another step you could take, would be to try that hub on another computer, and if you don't personally have another one, maybe a friend with a computer would help you do a little troubleshooting.

I don't have a clue, what a new hub would cost in the UK, but here in the colonies, I can buy a USB hub for as low as $14.95, usd.

I do wish you good luck finding a resolution to your problem. I know how aggravating those things can be.

Hello,

If you are so inclined, you may want to open the case on the hub and see if there is a component, such as a capacitor, which appears ruptured. If so, replacing it might fix the hub. On the other hand, perhaps it would be less expensive to simply replace it.

Doc Cool

Less than £5.00 ($7.50) powered and under £3.00 unpowered ($5)

I thought when I was there a couple of years back, the USA is expensive for that sort of kit.

Hello,

Depends greatly on the brand and where you buy it. Brando and DealExtreme are very inexpensive, if you don't mind waiting a bit for shipping from China. And, of course, there's always NewEgg and other domestical mail order stores.

Well, even if you buy one at any store in the US, flip the little box over and it will say "Made in China" on the bottom.

Almost NO electronics are made in the US any more.

Hello,

If you know of a company which manufactures USB hubs in the United States--or even performs final assembly of foreign-sourced components--then please let me know.

You can thank the Labor Unions, for all the electronics industries moving their facilities to China, Mexico or Taiwan.

For years, South Korea has been a very major supplier of solid state components.
Their labor costs are a mere fraction of those costs in the US.

I've watched several US companies literally devastated by the unreasonable demands of labor unions.
During a six month strike at the Caterpillar Tractor Co. in Peoria, Ill. a popular bumper sticker said "Will the last one out please turn off the lights".

I don't approve of everything we use, being made in China, but I do understand it.
About all we still make here is Hamburgers and Beer. Rolling Eyes

back about the hub not working.

go get the new usb driver update from microsoft update page/ windows update, then use the link to microsoft update you see on that windows page.

it should find the needed driver if you do in fact need the updated drivers.
