My ISP supplies a 2wire brand dslmodem/wireless/router. I want to be able to block a specific url for all computers on the network. This 2wire device (as configured by the ISP ) only allows you to turn on/off web browsing by individual pc's. The ISP does not use the advanced feature of this 2wire device which supplies content filtering.
Can I use my old router behind the 2wire to allow me to block url's on the whole network?
Thanks for your time. |

I'm running a Linksys G router connected to my Intellinet N router which is connected to my cable modem, and it's working great.
Why don't you just try it first and then ask questions if it doesn't work?

I thought about it some more and what I wanted to do won't work. I need the content filtering on the wireless as well. I have come up with a different solution. Thanks. |

| Why not just use OpenDNS? They allow blocking of url's, plus they help eliminate going to"less than desirable" or malicious sites. |

I'm not at the end quite yet.
I'm hoping to try out one possible solution this weekend.
1. D-Link DVA-G3810BN/TL. I'm told it supports content blocking.
2. Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 running DD-WRT. I've got a bricked router and a JTAG cable with which to try to recover it..
I'll try the D-Link first.

I have a working solution with the D-Link.
The D-Link allows two different methods to block urls. One under Firewall\Restrict Website and the other under Parental Controls\Enable Web Content Filtering\Filtering Policy\ by url or keywords.
I don't know what the difference between the different methods is. I tried using the second method and it worked. The only complaint is that the wireless radio strength isn't as strong as the 2wire 2700HG-E gateway it replaced. I put the antenna from the Buffalo on the D-Link and got another bar on the IPod's signal strength meter at the other end of the house. I've purchased an antenna with higher gain off eBay, and hope it will increase the signal more. |

As for blocking BAD web sites, who are you going to listen to?
Between the blocking protection provided by Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster and Hosts Manager, (which I use) there are thousands of sites that really need to be blocked, from your browser ever going there.
How will you get a list like that into your router?
Manual entry just ain't a gonna get it !!!
To protect children, for instance, you need to get your blocking protection into each computer that will go on the internet.
I can see a router acting as a firewall to prevent hacking, but as a web site filter, I just don't see it. What am I missing here?

I wanted the ability to block a single web site that I choose, not someone elses blacklist.. I wanted to be able to block them network wide, not by loading software or changing settings on each device. Of the 11 possible devices attached to the network, one is an iPod Touch, one OS X box and two others run Linux.
A one time manual entry in the router is what works here. I can toggle it on or off as needed.
