It looks like privacy will really be a thing of the past if this goes ahead:

X-ray cameras 'see through clothes' | UK Latest | Guardian Unlimited
Quote:
The Government is considering installing X-ray cameras on lampposts to spot armed terrorists and other criminals.

According to a leaked memo seen by The Sun, "detection of weapons and explosives will become easier" if the scheme drawn up by Home Office officials is adopted.

However, officials acknowledged that it would be highly controversial as the cameras can "see" through clothing.

"The social acceptability of routine intrusive detection measures and the operational response required in the event of an alarm are likely to be limiting factors," the memo warned.

"Privacy is an issue because the machines see through clothing." (continued)

Unbelievable. Maybe they should just save the money & ban clothing all together. No clothing = no opportunity to conceal a weapon. Problem fixed. Rolling Eyes

I've got to assume that this isn't being seriously considered except perhaps as part of airport security, but if it's going to be more widespread then I'll be writing to my MP - aside from any civil liberties issues, exposure to x-rays is dangerous.

There's talk about it in our airports too. Only they are promising to somehow "black out" the sensitive areas of the body...if you know what I mean.

Fortunately blacking out isn't needed. Xray does not pic up "those" things

Also, Most of our streets already have CCTV cameras installed, but most don't actually work for lack of staff/video tape etc. at the base of operations Rolling Eyes

Will this scheme work, assuming the cost isn't prohibitive?? I don't think so...

Um, about that.

What's being discussed isn't a regular x-ray, it takes pictures from three different angles, and then renders an image a bit like this one:

Stolen from the BBC's website. They didn't have a male one, so you'll have to get your wierd x-ray xxxx elsewhere I'm afraid.
