As posted elsewhere, the Vista UAC control, ( i.e. the annoying paranoia setting that makes Windows go dim and ask for permission twice before it will do anything ) was stopping my sharing Thunderbird folders with my wife's log-in to our PC.
I would lay a bet that it was also the reason why Windows Mail lost our e-mail passwords every time we switched user.
So, if you're having any problems with shared programmes or folders I'd look there first. Rolling Eyes

I turned it off and then disabled it. I would have given it a much more slow and torturous death if that was possible.

Why Microsoft, or anyone, thinks such a program is security is beyond me. Here's a clue for you "IF I CLICK ON THE DADGUM THING I AM GIVING IT PERMISSION, PERIOD." If I screw my computer up, so be it, I'll fix it. I'll find a way. I don't need you trying to take care of me to that degree. Sheeeez!

I turned it off, but as soon as I fed the system something it didn't like or caused some glitch to occur because of something I was doing, the dadgum thing turned itself on again and would not be turned off in UAC no matter how many times and ways I tried. So through a google inquiry found a way to disable it. SHIMANEE CRICKETS! Pure, twisted evil Twisted Evil

Go here if you want to disable it, not just turn if off: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-user-account-cont...uac-for

If you do not feel comfortable with this fix then don't do it. If you do then do it. In any case, it is your choice not someone elses. So be a man or woman and take back control of your life. Revolucion! Wink

I was trying to answer this thread when my satellite ISP went out due to a thunder storm rolling through the area. So here's what I was trying to say:
***************************************

That's totally WEIRD!

From that link, the downloadable file is a regedit script to do this:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"ConsentPromptBehaviorAdmin"=dword:00000000

And the one I've been using to shut off UAC, which seems to work well is this:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"EnableLUA"=dword:00000000

I don't see how the first one can disable UAC, while I know from my own experience, that the second one, the one I use, DOES disable UAC.

They are both in the same section and appear on the screen at the same time, so I suppose that both could be reset to Zero at the same time.

I'm implementing the first one on my Vista PC now. I'm curious what differences it will make in my permissions. But I'm not even sure how to test it.
I set that to zero as well as the following setting.
"ConsentPromptBehaviorUser"=dword:00000000

I'll see what that does.
I can always set it back if I need to.
Or I can just run a System Restore. Rolling Eyes

But I do set up (install) a lot of brand new PC's with Vista factory installed, and one of the very first things I do is run my little script to turn OFF UAC.
If I don't turn UAC OFF, it will drive me crazy while I'm trying to tweak and tune the new PC.

Well, that's just the first of many scripts I run to make improvements to Vista. It needs lots of help. Rolling Eyes Wink Laughing Laughing

I'm surprised that this thread has not garnered any more responses in the last three months. Rolling Eyes

If anyone is SHAKEY about getting into their registry or creating the Registry Script to turn off UAC, you can download my own "DisableUAC" script from
HERE!

Just click on "HERE" to start the download.
Then just run the script to Disable UAC on your own PC.
Put it on a flash drive or CD to share with your friends that also have Vista on their PC's.
It's also small enough to be sent via E-Mail or file transfer.

Cheers Maties!
