| I've been going crazy I recently purchased a new vista desktop...I had a tech install and set my old XP HD to "slave" in the computer so I could transfer my music...However, when I go to open the old drive...it prompts me to re-format the xp drive which will ERASE everything on my drive...I cannot even open it!!! I simply want to transfer my files on to the (new) Vista drive then erase the old one and use it for extra storage...I guess? Any help will be GREATLY appreciated...Thanks in advance!

| Giving us all the required information about your system would be a good place to start. Ya think?

Everything! Make, model, type of hard drives you're using, what OS, etc.
How is the "slave" drive connected?
It's obvious that the slave drive is NOT connected properly or your OS would read it correctly.
Didn't the guy who installed it, test it?
I surely would have done that and then I would have shown you the quickest and easiest way to transfer your files.
If those files are something you want to keep, then they should have been burned to DVD's. A hard drive is always the worlds worse place to 'store' data.
Because, every hard drive will crash, some day.

The good news is that once you sort out the hard drive access problem (I suspect improper cabling and/or setting to "slave" for the old drive), iTunes will move the music for you when you tell it to "organize" your music folder.
Did the tech who did the work also copy all the contents of "My Documents?". In XP, "My Documents" has a sub-folder "My Music". With Vista, the "Music" folder is at the same level as "Documents". In there will be an "iTunes" folder that might simple need to be re-located, rather than copying all the files. |

There is something fishy in Denmark. I recently did exactly the same thing, and everything worked smoothly. The old drive was instantly recognized in Vista and all data accessible.
Potential problems: Your new machine is SATA, and the old hard drive isn't. Maybe the IDE connector is not enabled in the BIOS.
There may be a BIOS setting for recognizing or ignoring drives formatted in FAT. (your new machine is NTFS for sure.)
During the transfer, the old drive was damaged somehow.
Since you are not a computer tecchie, I suggest you find someone who is to help you. What about the guy who did the move for you? Didn't he warranty his work? I would have gotten on the phone immediately and told him to fix it. |

I'm appalled at the growing number of people, both guys and gals, who put themselves out there as computer techs and are basically "Clueless".
They have no 'History' in computers. They can't even write a simple batch file in DOS or set up a secure backup routine.
The OP's complaint is a typical example. That computer should go right back to the guy who moved the hard drive with a demand to "Make it work"!
It's a fairly simple thing to periodically make a backup to CD or DVD of the "My Documents" folder, which will include "My Pictures" and "My Music", etc., by default.
On most PC's that's the area where those things you never want to loose are located. I'm forever showing my customers how to burn this folder to DVD's for safe storage.
I save so much stuff on a daily basis, that even loosing a day or two's new data would be way beyond an "Ooooops!".
So I wrote a little batch file to back up all new files to a folder on my #2 hard drive.
I attached the batch file to my Quick Shutdown routine for an automatic Daily Backup of all my "stuff".
Since we're not being told anything about that old hard drive, in spite of my request for "More Input", I guess we have to play 20 questions, or just take a SWAG at it. (ScientificWildAxxedGuess)
I'm going to GUESS that the old drive is an IDE drive, and that it was put on the same cable with the CD/DVD drive. If that was done, then the CD drive should have been RE-Jumpered as the MASTER drive and the IDE hard drive should have been jumpered as the SLAVE. Then the BIOS can differentiate between the two drives and present the hard drive to Windows as a legitimate drive which then could be read. (assuming that it's actually working)
Failure to properly connect a second HD in a system is the cause of many problems and many new cries for HELP on the internet.
It's as basic as plugging in your toaster if you want to make toast.
Good Luck,

It would be more helpful if the originator would come back with some input as was previously requested.
If the problem was solved, that would be good to know as well.

You're responding to a two month old post, where the originator didn't even respond to the answers we gave him, so I doubt he's going to read your post either. Ya think?
