We had to destroy the schools in order to save them
by David Safier
Arnold Schwarzenegger is doing everything in his power to save California education. Like: Eliminating a week of school.
Increasing class size. Freezing teacher salaries.
Cutting the science graduation requirement from two courses to one.
Cutting $2.1 billion from this year's education budget
and $3.1 billion from next year's.
Boy oh boy, is California lucky it has a pro-education Governor!

| It's sad that when government needs money, they cut education. It's not just happening in California. There's a professor at a state university (Uh .... make that THE state university) that just got let go.

The nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office delivered the grim news this week that revenues were falling even further than the alarming levels that prompted Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to call legislators back for a special session. The state is now on course toward a deficit of nearly $28 billion over the next 18 months. "This is a situation," said Schwarzenegger, " unlike any we've ever witnessed here."
The math is apparent - addition (revenues) and subtraction (expenses). The political will is not.
Schwarzenegger has produced a plausible - but politically painful - plan to fill most of the estimated $11 billion gap in the current fiscal year. It would include a 1 1/2 cent increase in the sales tax, a nickel-a-drink increase in alcohol taxes, an oil severance tax and cuts to a wide range of government programs. The taxes would generate about $4.5 billion; the cuts would save $4.7 billion..... |
Source.
You can't spend it if you don't have it (unless your the federal government)
Hey! This. might save Cali some cash!! |

Or your state could learn how to follow a budget. Ours is doing fine

| The state ended the year with nearly $600 million in its main checking account. That combined with savings accounts left the state with a budget surplus of about $1.4 billion. |

One has only to look back at all the wacky and often costly ballot intiatives and legislation California has passed over the years to understand its present plight. Its a self inflicted wound to be sure. I find it somewhat telling that the most Liberal Democratic state in the union is also in the running for state with the worst financial shape in the country. Other states competing for that dubious honor would include Florida, Massachusetts and New York. And to think the whole country gets to start the year off fresh with a new Liberal president and congress. Be still my heart.
Did I see a post actually trying to blame this mess on Iraq? I say we pony up some of that bail out money and buy every person in America a full length mirror so they won't have to look so hard or far for someone or something else to blame when things go bad. |

| I guess several states have gotten together to ask for a trillion dollars for infrastructure projects. I just saw a clip on the news. RI is one state but, they didn't say what other states. |
