I don't remember if I ever had this problem in the old XP days, but I am having it now with Win 7. The problem is the one pixel wide white stripe that appears on top of the task bar when it is "hidden". Is there any way to get rid of that single pixel white stripe? (There are some graphics display issues involving that white stripe. If I could make it black or otherwise disappear it would solve the problems. |

Hello,
I am not certain, but I believe this is intentional and done to remind the user that the Taskbar can still be accessed by moving the cursor over the part of the Taskbar that remains "sticking out" from the bottom of the screen.

Yes. You are right.
I have refined the problem. On my desktop, I have an application that, when running in full screen mode covers the taskbar, even when it is not in "hidden" mode. And when the taskbar is "hidden" the stripe is also. But when this same application is running on my laptop, it won't hide the taskbar at any time in any mode. There must be a taskbar switch somewhere that regulates this, but I can't find it. There used to be a "taskbar always on top" button, but I don't see one now.
Both computers are running Win7 64 bit.

After doing some research elsewhere I found the following information:
Microsoft really did do away with the "always on top" switch in Win 7. There seem to be an equal number of folks stranded in "off" mode who want "on" as there are folks stranded in "on" mode who want "off".
There seems to be a registry edit that does the trick, but you have to jump through hoops to be sure the registry does not revert back to its former status when you reboot. The "hoops" you have to jump through seem to involve a small utility that shuts off your computer. The problem is that that utility does not do its job in the 64 bit versions of Windows.
Now, I have a computer with a "fresh" install of Win7 where the taskbar is "always on top". And I have a computer with an install of Win7 over top of Vista. You guessed it--The on top of Vista install has permanent "taskbar not always on top" because that is what Vista was set to.
What a mess. Why not just let us do what we want, and restore the button allowing either mode. I guess M$ just knows best... |

Sounds like a good addition to a POWERTOY
<rant mode on>
BTW: M$ isn't the ONLY OS that is playing this "we'll remove this control" stuff as I know linux has & I think I read / heard MAC has to. - Or they "bury it so deep you have to go to the other side of the planet to find it".
This is one thing I always hated, about M$ anyway, & now the rest seem to want to do it. Personally, I feel that there should be one area that has ALL the controls accessible & if anyone is afraid of it STAY AWAY FROM IT. (As I read that's one reason this is being done as there are those crying about all the weird controls that can't be understood & I break my machine - well JUST LEAVE THE **** STUFF ALONE, THEN) - I guess the reg would qualify, to some degree, but that isn't what I'm referring to. (at least this is to intimidating for the average user or M$ would probably make THAT inaccessible as well)
Sorry for the rant
<rant mode off>
BTW again: I don't have anything here that will run W7 or I'd try to give you some assistance. But it is safe to say that I have ran into this & you ARE on the right track, just need to get to that control. (IIRC) |

Rant ON Brother! Rant ON!
You're in good company. Millions of other Win-7 users are finding out that what used to be as simple as a mouse click on XP, for instance, is either GONE or buried so deep you can't find it.
I'm constantly searching the world for scripts or batch files to fix things in win-7.
So far, I've got quite a collection.
One to Kill Hibernation
One to Kill 'ctfmon'
One to show all hidden files
One to move the kernel from the HD to RAM on boot. (greatly increases system performance! )
One to shut down all the totally redundant 'Services'.
One to "Take Ownership" of any file or folder
One to "Kill the UAC" (just to preserve Sanity)
New Desktop shortcuts, include.
One to run Disk Cleanup in an Enhanced Mode
One to force a Quick Shutdown of windows.
One little script, in the "Startup" folder, forces a new Restore Point on every boot.
That's only a partial list, but I'm sure you get the idea.
I've even started ganging some scripts together to simplify installation.
Like, I've combined "Take Ownership" and "Disable UAC" into a single script, because I never install one, without the other.
Also, Kill Hibernation and Show all hidden files could easily be combined into just one script.
I have Win-7 Ultimate installed on a separate HD, where I can experiment with it.
My main OS is still XP, running on its own HD.
I don't see Win-7 becoming my main OS any time in the foreseeable future.
Y'all have a great day now, and, Merry Christmas!

How in the <censored> is an admin to do his job? He'd have to spend a WEEK just gathering the tools ALONE! |
