Hello,
I have the situation that, on my computer, the taskbar has suddenly disappeared from the viewable area of the screen. I only see the 'balloons' which pop up, considerably lower than they should be.
I've tried moving the position of the desktop (on the monitor), which didn't help..so it can't be cut off by the monitor.
Before this happened, the language bar and quick-launch bar took up the whole area of the taskbar, which is meant to display open programs.
I tried to fix this..also disabling both toolbars, to no avail. Instead my whole taskbar disappears.
I do get the start menu when I press the windows key on the keyboard, and the start menu appears at the top left of the screen (as far up as it goes without being cut off)
why on earth could this happen? and how can i fix it?
this problem is on no other account on the computer, only on mine Confused
Appreciate any help Very Happy
I don't fancy deleting my account Shocked

ohhh yeah, and I'm running XP SP2 Home Edition Smile

Is it possible that you unlocked the taskbar and sized the taskbar all the way down? Rolling Eyes
If it is, size the taskbar up by moving the mouse to the bottom of the screen and click and drag it up so you can see the taskbar

Thank you Smile
I had indeed tried that, but I tried again now..when I unlock the taskbar, i can see the very top of it at the bottom of the screen.
Unfortunately, I can't move the taskbar anywhere Sad
And if this would have been the reason, I still wouldn't have understood how the start menu got all the way to the top Laughing

Try system restoring to a time before this had happened. It could be when you installed something, it altered Windows files.

hmm..the problem is that, last time i did a system restore, my OS became corrupt. which meant i had to do a complete clean reinstall Shocked
so i'm a little hesitant in doing that Confused
looks like it may be that this is what i end up doing, though Laughing

My start menu is at the top left hand side,
this is because my taskbar is on the left side,
has your taskbar moved to the side ?

Hello,

Kelly's Korner, a popular troubleshooting web site, has a utility program available callled Taskbar Repair Tool Plus which may solve the problem. It is available for download from http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm.

I'm positive I haven't moved the taskbar to the side, seeing that, when it's unlocked, i see the very top of it at the bottom of the screen. And i cannot find the taskbar at the side. But thanks for the suggestion Very Happy
@Goretsky
Thank you for the link. I will try the program on my computer in a few weeks (i currently am not with my machine anymore Laughing )
I'll say how it went Smile

It would have taken less than five minutes and NO posts on the internet to do a System Restore and put your whole computer back the way it was before the "accident" screwed things up! Wink

It's not like we've never talked about that here.....at least a thousand times or so, before now.

When will people learn, that System Restore is your best friend in the world, when something has messed up your PC???

I don't just wait for Windows to make one of its occasional Restore Points....
I FORCE a new restore point on EVERY boot up, reboot, etc.
I may get a half a dozen a day, but so what?......I've always got a fresh one when I need one. Idea

I would very much have liked to do a system restore, and it's a resource i usually turn to first Smile
i just preferred to solve the problem another way if possible, since doing system restores on this computer has previously wrecked my OS Shocked
i know, i know..i should do back-ups, and then this wouldn't be a problem (:
i'm still getting there though..where this computer is concerned Laughing
