I am a web developer and mainly use my computer for web browsing, typing documents, Photoshop, bittorrent, and making websites with PSPad.

I'm getting bored of my PC and am looking for an alternative. Would a Mac be good for me? What makes the Mac OS better than Windows?

I'd venture to say OS X is more stable than any Windows OS.

Aside from that, I see a Mac as a great machine if you want to do pretty well what you mentioned. Things like graphics, video editing. Heck, I've seen some feature that makes for easy programming with Java. Yeah, I don't personally have one of the new Macs, but that's what I'd want to get one for. Just a great machine. Pricey yes, but well worth the money in my opinion. The only issue you need to look at is if there's any files you deal with that may have compatibility issues in switching to a Mac. But unlike Windows, OS X does a good job at providing you with options for keeping stuff compatible between OS X and Windows.

My vote: go for the Mac! Very Happy

I think I've decided to go for a Mac myself.
I was just wondering about what, if any, hidden costs there might be when purchasing a Mac?
Thanks. Smile

Only a couple important items to think about.

Do you want to use a phone line for fax or internet? The modem is not built in and needs to be added (it is a very small usb to phone line plug that won't bother you to carry).

Do you use external displays? Some machines that have interanal display need adapters for the TV or display. Apple has a universal jack that you need to purchase the adapter cable for what connecter the display has.

That covers the important hardware thoughts. After that comes what software do you want?

Enjoy

There are more than just good looks for going to the mac.

You mention you do a lot of work in graphics and the web, well heres the tip. Mac renders and displays fonts and images different than windows. Windows is mainly built for reading text, like office work. Whereas the mac is more for those who do a lot of design and need a good quality of image. Mac is deffinately better for someone in the graphics or art department!

Hi there.

I have turned to the Mac side recently from being a PC man for more years than I care to remember.

If I can offer this advice. If you're looking to open the lid, surf the web, write a few docs and play around with torrents and pics then you will LOVE the mac. Everything i've ever plugged in has just simply worked straight away.

I went down the route of putting windows on via bootcamp. I ended up taking it off because I bought the mac because it's a mac lol. The OS seems really stable, secure, helpful.

Get yourself a macbook and you wont be let down. Crucial are doing some brilliant deals on memory upgrades so see what they offer before you start doing upgrades on your mac purchase.

hope this helps
