Try right clicking the button, and you should get a subscribe option. I've not used Abilon, so I don't know for sure, but most of the programs can do this. You may need to have Abilon open when you do this. For Mac RTM, there ussually isn't a right click.

You quite possibly may be right. If you don't receive any other newsletters that offer RSS, you don't read any BLOGS, You don't care about what is availalbe in RSS from any of the 3000+ other sources, and you don't want to have any of these forum threads coming to your reader instead of having to go online for them, then there is no reason for you to have RSS.
RSS really is an optional way to receive your news, and other information.
I really like RSS, and I find that I can get more done using it. Your experience may be different.

As far as spending the extra money, there are several readers out there that are free.
