| Today I dutifully did windows updates on 2 computers. 1 XP pro, the other Win 2000. At the conclusion both had the same problem. Firefox, IE, Eudora, Skype ... none could get to the internet. Finally on XP I did a system restore to a point prior to the update, and all is well on that machine. There is no such option on Win 2000. Any hints how I can get it back in operation ... very frustrating as it is my main machine. ... Al Stewart

Go into add - remove & check the box that says show update (or hidden can't recall the wording) & you SHOULD be able to remove. Probably have to look at dates to tell which ones or compare to the working machine.
Hope I got this right, been a while since I looked at 2000.
BTW: Now you know EXACTLY why I don't do them unless ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY & then only one or to at a time & MANUALLY. - Will NEVER AGAIN do auto. Had a computer totally hosed by this **** swore off it then & there.
I DO, do them on me Fedora box, so far all are OK. But if I get bit there..., same thing!!!!! |

Unfortunately that "show update" thing is in XP not 2000.

| In XP the uninstalls are in C: Windows. They the funny looking names with the $xxxxxx$ names. Don't know a thing about 2000, but could there be a way to run the uninstall from there or from a command of some kind? If you've go them, that is. |

Okay ... that did it .. thanks ... I found the two that were dumped in today, and uninstalled them, and I'm back on line.

Personally, As for security, I'd trust ZA to do the right thing for my computer before I ever would M$. So I'd hose the update 1st.
Do you REALLY want to trust the one that created the problems in the first place? |

Likewise!
Since most people don't do regular backups on their C: drive, to allow them to recover from all sorts of things, like bad updates, shutting off auto-updates is the next best thing.
Then if you do manual updates, accept them only one at a time.
And, make sure your System Restore program is working.
Everyone should look at their own PC and ask themselves,
"What do I do if.......?". And, "can I really stand to loose everything on my C: drive?"
IF, you don't have a plan for a full C: drive recovery in case of disaster, then maybe you should.
We've discussed that 'Topic' here in this very forum, more times than I can count.
I prefer Norton's Ghost, while some others prefer "Acronis True Image" and others might use "Disk Image" or "Max-Blast".
But having a total backup of C: in the can, so to speak, is priceless when something messes up your Windows or the Windows Drive crashes.
With NO system restore for Windows 2k, I'd think that would be a very good computer to have totally backed up to a second HD.
That could be an internal or external drive.
And do your HD cleanup and backup once a week, at least, not once a year.
Like I tell my customers, "Do it Weekly,,,,,, NOT Weakly".
Cheers Mates!

aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhgggggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I been fighting with this all last night and today i cant get the da... g thing to get online now.
i did find it was the kb951748 or the kb951978 and uninstalled both from this computer but it is not working on my dell. i unistalled the ie, and i reinstalled the old ie 6 but now the da m thing wont install the ie 7 cause it still can't get online.
i had to hunt the folders for them in windows folders and i could not get them uninstalled that way either so i deleted the junk. but that wont work either so how can i get that dell back on line cause this old unit is using slow dial up and its killing me i want my highspeed back.
confounded ms crap anyway. i did tell my mom to uninstall them and now i got the auto updated turned off on her machine and all these ones. i have never and i repeat never in memory had an error like this caused by an ms security update. mom thinks like i do they are trying to make every one go to win vista.

I DO believe that those HAVE to be removed NOT deleted as there is stuff in reg & elsewhere that HAS to go to. - Don't forget about system restore... Just hope the c****y thing actually set one.
Manual cleanup COULD be a *****!!!!! |

yep your right they do need to be unistalled.
but when i did that. windows tossed me an error and said it could not unistall them cause they were not there? but they were in the computer and installed so the add remove programs thing messed me up on the uninstall.
i did run all the heavy duty reg, cleaners i have after i deleted them and still it can not find anything for them. but there seems to be something some place? but i got it working with that zonealarm tip, just it took me 18 hours of messing around on this to get it back online. mainly cause i was getting po'ed and was not going to let the computer win.
so while trying something else i turned on the other computer and did a search here in this forum and found this thread.
so i did win but i had to use another computer to find the answer, |
