Try closing background tasks before you begin to play. Press CTRL, ALT, Delete, once that screen opens, click the tab at the top labeled "Processes". Once you click that you should see a white screen with a long list of words in 3-4 collumns. The second collumn should be labeled "User Name". Click that. Now they should all be in order according to the user names. Find the name that is different from "LOCAL SERVICE", "SYSTEM", and "NETWORK SERVICE:. In other words, the things that aren't in all caps. It should be a name, like yours or whoever's account you're on. In this user name, and THIS ONE ONLY, start ending the process of everything EXCEPT explorer.exe, taskmgr.exe, and iexplorer.exe. Once you've ended these processes, exit out of the task manager, and all other applications you have open, and try to run the Sims again. Once you're finished playing the Sims, restart your computer and all of the processes will be back up and running.
Note: restarting your computer is crucial because you probably ended some firewalls, ect. and if you plan on getting back on the internet, that could get you viruses.
I'm sorry that was such a long explanation, but I hope it helps.
