I used to strem Audio from my web site aqnd it was easy to do this with my RealPlayer Plus and Windows XP Home. But .......
Now I have this "wonderful" new operating system, called Vista home premium
and suddenly I cannot use my RealPlayer Plus because they decided not to support a 64 bit system and so my streaming does not work any more. So what to do? I wonder if I can use Windowws Media Player 11, since it comes with Vista 64bit? But since I am no smart technologist I do not know if and how to create streaming files all I needed for my old real player wast the audio or veo files to be in a folder on my web site together with a ram file. Thes wast easy and no sweat. Now how do I do things with Win-Media-Player 11?
I could use some help by giving me a step by step explanation - Can you tell me how? I sure hope so.

| This is really not a reply to my own post, but an addition to it, because I thought that by now I would actually have hundres of replies on how to do this all so I could go back to re-building my website with audio and all.
Well maybe tomorrow..........

I'm a bit confused here as the programs you mention (unless they changed since I last used them - been a good while) are for WATCHING streams not creating them. So just what is it that you want to do, watch or create or both?
If you are just watching, then as long as the site streams in the format you are using (such as Windows) then yes you can do that. But if they only are RA then you will need something that supports that. - like real alternative or VLC.
If you are creating, then you will need the SERVER program that supports this. VLC is the only one that I currently know of that will. IF, you can't get REAL SERVER (or there other program - REAL STUDIO I think it is called, or was)
The last I tried ANY "real" stuff, none of it would work right so gave up on it. That is when I started using VLC - not sure what they (RA) have going now. Been a LONG while since I did any creating. I think it was on 98 or early XP.
(not sure on any of these being 64b) |

From what I can tell, I really don't think WMP, being a "PLAYER" can create streams - as stated earlier, you need a "SERVER" program to do that. (not sure how you did this with a "player" unless it now has some sort of rudimentary streamer in it)
Also, don't confuse the terminology to mean that you have to run it on a true server. Technically, all computers can be (are) a server.
Without doing a bunch of research into this, I can't provide any more info than this.
But I'd think that if you have the knowledge to run a website, you should be able to use a search engine & do the research for yourself as you will need this info to do anything with the streaming anyway. Need more help, please come back & ask.
Search for programs such as - media producer, server, creator, encoder or such.
Real DOES have these but I'm not sure about 64b versions. There used to be a "free" version, so do some digging.
Hope this at least helps...
BTW: the other option of course, would be to obtain a copy of the 32b VISTA.(or any other OS to your liking) As Vista is (or at least was) troublesome enough, without it being 64b - getting support (especially drivers) is gonna be a PITA as you are finding out. - Come to think of it, I THINK, Vista 64 MAY support some 32b apps. worth checking that, too. - have you tried running it?
Also, consider that if YOU change the streaming software (brand?) on YOUR end, people on the OTHER END will have to follow suite & use whatever will play your new format. (M$ vs REAL) |

Hello,
You can find the Windows Media Encoder here on Microsoft's web site.
