Hi everyone, I am new to the forums and have a problem. When I start my computer, i get a error that says:

Invalid BOOT.INI File

Then my computer starts fine Confused. when i go into the msconfig, there is no boot.ini tab. Does anyone know how i can fix this error?

What operating system?
When you search and put boot.ini in what occurs?

Quote:
Here is an example of a boot.ini in XP:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Here is an example of a boot.ini in 2000
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

Don't do anything until you are sure that hidden files are shown.

I have Windows XP. When i search C:/ for boot.ini, it finds boot.ini.backup and that is it. I also picked for it to search in hidden folders too and that is all it found.

Open that backup copy in Notepad, and see if it doesn't look a lot like the first example in the previous post. If so,
then rename it removing the backup part. Reboot.

Something must have deleted your Boot.ini file.
What? Well that's anyones guess.

The boot.ini SHOULD NOT be in C:\Windows; it belongs in C:\
The computer needs it BEFORE windows boots up. It isn't finding it where it expects it to be so you will keep getting the error.
Open notepad or something similar and paste what I have posted as the example for XP starting with [boot loader]
save the file as boot.ini to your desktop. Open Windows Explorer and drag the file from your desktop to the root, also known as C:\
