HI!
I haven't been around in a very, very long time because I'm in school and a tiredmother, too!

I am studying accounting, yet, for some reason, we are expected to write SQL queries using Microsoft's Query Analyzer. I can do the simple ones but the last three in the assignment are beyond me. The assignment is made harder by the fact that I can't access the database except at the school which is 45 minutes away. I never seem to have more than thirty minutes between picking up one of the kids somewhere or going to work. It's due Thursday. Sad

I was wondering if some kind, ultra-smart SQL wizard on these forums would be willing to help a tiredmother trying to get through an accounting class.

I could send you the exercise in .pdf which includes the tables being queried with their respective attributes. Note, I do not consider this cheating because collaboration is allowed. (I've checked with just over 50% of the other students in my class, and they can't figure it out either! We're accounting majors!!!)

Thanks for anything helpful you can offer!
Teresa

So you want someone to do your homework. :hmm: It is nice to see you posting again anyway. Just kidding about the homework.

Yep! I knew there would be one!

(But I must have my e-mail wrong in the profile Teddy because I never got your message.) Sad

Thank you so much for the offer! I find the most helpful people here! But, I worked on it last night and broke it down into the steps (it was only two!) needed to create the subquery, then the query. Then, I took it to the teacher and said, "now, what?" He's a good teacher and helped me finish it up. I printed it out earlier today and now wash my hands of it! Thanks anyway!

Hi tiredmother, good luck in the class. I envy you because you are majoring in an interesting field. I took some basic accounting courses in college. I don't think I have used SQL in an accounting class before. I use PL/SQL in my Oracle database programming class.

I can do simple queries like:

select * from accounts
where salary = 30000
group by 'Last_Name';

That's about it.

Bye

Thank you starionwolf...I'm fortunate to be attending school right now, that's for sure.

Yeah, these were (unfortunately) a lot more complicated than that. It's a new class for the school, for the prof and for the program. The accounting firms that come on campus to interview for interns and other new hires expressed strong desires for accounting grads to have a better ability to communicate with the IT people about what they need the system to do and the controls that need to be in place.

Additionally, Sarbanes-Oxley (fallout from Enron) created a new oversight board that issued a standard requiring auditors to provide a statement attesting to the management's assessment that the controls in their IT system are adequate and functioning the way they ought to function. Sort of hard for the auditor to do that if he/she doesn't have a clue how the system is supposed to work! (Sheesh! I sound as exciting as my textbooks! Surprised I looked for a sobbing smilie - couldn't find one!)

We've been told that a CPA with an MIS (management information systems) option would be hired immediately upon graduation by just about any firm they were interested in. It makes sense...how much accounting actually takes place away from a computer these days? Not much! I've thought about it but I'm already a tiredmother with a 6 quarters to go and the MIS option would add four more. I just can't face that!

Thanks for the tears....hmm...that doesn't seem right.

I think it's English, but I don't know anymore, the accounting classes have distorted my view of reality.
