Post subject: Spybot fixes major problems

Once again, the "Team Spybot" has risen to the occasion and fixed a couple of major problems with ver 1.5.1.15

One problem was the 30+ seconds it took for the program to load and begin displaying the loading screen on the desktop. The other problem was the time wasted checking the Floppy Drive (if you have one).

While reading in the Spybot forum I found out that there's a Beta update to ver 1.5.1.17

I just Googled for the download sites and found this one.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Popup-Ad-Spyware-Blockers/SpyBot...rch-Des

I downloaded the Beta Upgrade, nic-named the "Halloween Upgrade" and it installed just fine, right over the previous version.

On opening Spybot from the desktop Icon, it was loaded and running in less than 10 sec's. Downloads and scans also seem to be 'Turbo-Charged'.

I don't normally do "Beta Upgrades" , but this one is a KEEPER. Wink

Happy Computing!

Thanks, TheShadow.

As you said v1.5.1.17 loads a lot faster.

Seems like the people at Spybot S&D have finalized their Beta Version.

It's now re-released as an rc1 version (1.5.2rc1).

So if you're squeamish about installing a Beta version of a program, fear not, this new release is the REAL THING!

I just downloaded it from
http://filehippo.com/download_spybot_search_destroy/

It installed right over the beta version and it works great.
It got a massive update! Not surprising though.

If you're on dial-up internet, plan on watching something good on the TV while the download progresses. Wink Laughing Laughing

Cheers mates!

Thanks, drwho07.

Took me 30 minutes to download on dialup here.

Told you so! Laughing Laughing

That only happens on a new install though.

The weekly update (posted on Wednesdays, now) will only be
one or two, maybe three elements, and should go pretty fast,
even on dial-up.

Cheers Mate!

Having a bit of a prob here - I've downloaded 1.5.2 and installed it, but every time I fire it up, it re-installs and downloads all the same updates over and over..

Any ideas, please?

Thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply! I've had a look through the SpyBot Forum (many thanks for the link!), but can't find anyone with the same problem thus far.. I'll have another - deeper - look tomorrow..

I'm running XP Pro SP2 with all current updates.

Tee Dee,
You shouldn't be having those problems.

There may be leftovers from an earlier version causing you problems.
When I have any troubles like that with any program, I uninstall it, then delete the folder and files for the program from the "Program Files" folder.
Then reboot, re-download the program and re-install it.

That almost ALWAYS fixes any problems.

I've had to do that so often on so many computers that I don't even think anything about it anymore... I just do it and move on.

So, give that a try.
Make sure that all running programs are SHUT DOWN when you install the program. Other programs, especially Anti Virus programs can interfere with the install.

Good Luck,
The Doctor

Sorry to have taken so long to reply, Doc - thanks for your help! Worked a treat - I went a little further and also backed up the registry, then used RegEdit to do a complete clean-out: three keys were 'flushed' using simply 'spybot' as the keyword..

When I re-installed 1.5.2, it behaved as you predicted - no more 'looped' installs and updates. Hums along nicely and does a great job.

Thanks, Mate! Very Happy

Like Hannibal Smith used to say on "The A Team".....

"I love it when a plan comes together"!! Wink

Now you'll never have trouble with a program upgrade, ever again. Right?

In most cases, installing a new version of a program right over the old one comes off OK. But then there's the exception to the rule. (Murphy's Law) Rolling Eyes Laughing Laughing

Installing new programs with your Anti-Virus program running, for instance, is almost a sure fire recipe for failure.

Before installing anything new, I run a little Utility Program called "End It All".
When run, it can shut down every running program on your PC except for the system files needed to keep XP running.

I use it before running any program install. I use it before running my CD/DVD burning software (Nero) and I use it before doing my weekly HD maintenance and finally doing a defrag. Everything just runs so much smoother with all running programs, like my AV program, shut down.

Cheers Mate, and thank you for the feedback,
The Doctor
