OK - sorry for the delay in replying...
The problem is rather sporadic - and in actual fact, I have now discovered is affecting all clients - not just XP, the 2000 clients are having the same problem.
It seems to do it on only ONE network drive, and generally only on ONE folder on that one network drive. Very strange!
I have looked at the duplex settings, and they are set to auto-sense, as they always have been, and are still connecting at 100mbps.
As I say - this is a sporadic problem, but strikes about 2-3 times a day - other days you can get away with it doing it once, or maybe not a all.
There is no serious traffic running around on the network - which is what is so strange.
Any other suggestions anyone? |

| Offline files? I've seen them cause huge slow downs. Try deleting any shortcuts in My Network Places and disabling offline files, if you've got them. Also, if you are still using mapped drives, you might want to think about deleting those as well.

Deleting mapped drives???
We use about 4 (ish) on each client, but they are necessary, for different pieces of software to work.
Offline files, and shortcuts in network places are a possibility, will try that when I am in tomorrow.
Thank you everyone for your continued help. |

Mapped drives slow things down since Windows has to check and enumerate each share every time Explorer does something. Since that's also the Windows shell, a bad or not optimally functioning mapped drive can impact things.
Also don't forget that you might be looking for the proverbial straw, rather than the smoking gun here, so try out several different things on a test machine.

So when I try some of this stuff out, if I do it on ONE machine - if it is the cause, will it fix it on THAT machine, or are we talking about changing it on all of them, and slowly the network will speed up again?
I will try turning offline files off in GPO - that way everything gets changed just like that.
Thanks! |

In an ideal world...
You would have NO mapped drives. Since that isn't possible, see how close you can get.
The more you have... The more things suck. |

At the moment at least, reducing the number of mapped drives isn't really an option - too much depends on them.
I turned off offline files in a GPO about a week, and, touch wood, we appear to be running OK now...I won't hold my breath, but for now at least, it seems to be running quite well.
Thanks very much everyone! |
