Post subject: Slow PC and no shut down!

Hi. Just of late my PC is running VERY slowly and also 2 times out of 3 won't shut down properly. It gets to the 'Windows is shutting down' screen but my PC just keeps on running and I eventually have to switch it off at the mains.

Is there something nasty lurking in my machine?

Many thanks.

Rob.

You can try disabling a bunch of those startup programs to see if it helps...see below:

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you checked the last one:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PWRISOVM.EXE] C:\Program Files\PowerISO\PWRISOVM.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinampAgent] "C:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [updateMgr] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AdobeUpdateManager.exe" AcRdB7_0_9 -reboot 1
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [swg] C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpybotSD TeaTimer] C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

* Click on 'Scan your PC' button. There should be a popup - if you have a pop-up blocker, make sure it's not blocking it.
* Click 'Check Now' & a pop-up window will appear.
* Enter your Country, State and E-mail Address & click 'Scan Now' - begin downloading Panda's ActiveX controls (8 MB size).
* Begin the scan by selecting My Computer.
* If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Ignore any entry it finds (since it wants you to buy the program for removal) as we will address this later.
* Click on see report. Then click Save report.
* Post that log in your next reply.

Download Deckard's System Scanner at http://deckard.geekstogo.com/dss.exe or http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe and save it to your desktop.

- Close all applications and windows.
- Double-click on DSS.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
- When the scan is complete, two text files will open - Main.txt and Extra.txt

Post the main.txt (copy and paste it in your reply) and extra.txt (attach it in your next reply) from the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder into your next reply.

Is AVG also running at this time? If so, try disabling it for the time being when you are running the Panda scan to see if it helps.

Everything looks good from here. Are you still having problems? Is Internet Explorer 7 giving you problems? I see it listed in the errors there.

Brilliant thanks!

The shut down of my PC is no longer an issue now, thank you very much for that.

Re, Internet Explorer 7. I do get some strange things happening from time to time, and I get an error/change listed when I run an AVG scan, I didn't realise that it was a problem with IE7, can I fix the error?

Thanks again.

Rob.

You can give this a try to see if it helps:
Go to Start->Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit OK. Let it scan. If it finds any files missing/corrupted, it may ask for the Windows CD. Otherwise, it will auto-close after it's done.

Otherwise, try asking this in the Windows board to see if anyone has other possible solutions for the IE7 related issue.
