Instructions for 2000/XP:

To change the transfer mode right click My Computer > click properties > click hardware > click device manager > click the + sign to expand the tree > click on IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS, double click primary IDE controller > click advanced settings change the transfer mode on device 1 to PIO only.
If it's greyed out then your CD/DVD drive isn't on the primary IDE so exit that and try device 0 on the secondary IDE controller.

Also worth trying a different CD/DVD drive.

OK. So yes, I admit my sin: I did try a cracked copy of SIMS2. Then I started enjoying it and I got myself a legal DVD. No problem. Then I bought a PETS expansion but after the installation it says that I need to reinstall SIMS2 (which I did a couple of times). The same 2 DVD's work just fine on another computer. Does my computer "remember" the illegal copy? Anything I can do?
Thank you.

Hello chicchi and welcome to Lockergnome!

Uninstall the expansion pack and the main game.
Then delete any folders left over from the uninstallation.
Run registry cleaner such as CCleaner to clean up any errors in your registry and clean up your temporary files.
Restart the PC, install the main game, patch it and then try Pets.

Hi, I am a newbie on this forum. I saw that you already helped a lot of people ZEUS GB. So.. Am i hopeless? Crying or Very sad

My specs:

Operating System Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2
Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2600+
Graphics Card: nVidia GeForce FX 5200
Memory: 1,50 GB DDR
Mother Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. A7N8X-E REV 2.xx
Cool

My problem is that when i try to run Sims 2 or Sims 2 University, it says: "Failed to find any DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapters in this system! Please make sure you have a DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest drivers provided by the manufacturer. The application will now terminate."

First of all, I played Sims 2 with the University Expansion pack about a month ago, and it worked fine. I have already reinstalled the game 3 times (yes, i deleted all directorys, and registry values with RegSupreme). So that probably ain't the problem. I already installed the newest graphic drivers for my card (v93.71), installed the latest Patches for both games, reinstalled DirectX 9.0c from microsofts site and I still get this error... Now it only works windowed when I put the - w command in the shortcut and set it to minimized. If you ask me next to unplayable.

Can anyone help me, plz?
Thanks in advance. Very Happy

Hello JC_91 and welcome to Lockergnome!

The DirectX error can ber caused by lots of different things.

Have you tried restoring your system to an earlier time using Windows system restore?
Have you tried running Driver Cleaner and then installing the latest drivers?
Have you tried runnning slighly older drivers such as the 84.21?
Have you updated your motherboard chipset drivers?

Here is one solution to the DirectX error on startup:

If you have used a program called Reforce to make your CRT monitor to always display its highest refresh rate, you will get the DirectX failure error.

When you run Reforce, this forces the monitor to always display its highest screen refresh rate by making all the lower ones off limits on every resolution the monitor can display.

If you have a monitor with maximum refresh rates that are higher than the ones The Sims 2 can choose in its settings, then the game will be unable to run and throws up the DirectX error.

The Sims 2, by default when it is installed, is set to 800x600 with a refresh rate of 56 Hertz. I note this for people with other refresh rate issues. It seems apparent that if your monitor is stuck to a resolution or refresh rate that the game is unable to display, it will throw up the DirectX error.

I don't know if it's because my monitor won't show them, but the resolutions 1440x900 and 1680x1050 were not available in the game's display options.

I don't think EA is aware of the Reforce issue; it is in none of their troubleshooting FAQs on the thesims2.ea.com site or forums. Could someone with an account on there bring this to their attention?

Problem: I'm crashing every hour or so and the game's effiency is running slower than usual. Noticably, it crashes with a light blue screen and the mouse cursor makes a loading sign and it keeps on loading and loading without an end until I ctrl + alt + delete and end task. Sometimes it even states (when I'm playing in windows mode)

Quote:
"Failed to find any DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapters in this system! Please make sure you have a DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest drivers provided by the manufacturer. The application will not terminate"

and I wouldn't be able to reopen the game again until I restart my PC. I would like to mention that I downloaded a total's worth of 227 MB of skins and objects from sites for my own enjoyment. Would that be any problem? I fear that i may need to reformat but everything is a mess in my pc at the moment as how i would like to back a few things up. I might want to add that my motherboard isn't so swell at the moment, I'm planning to buy another motherboard to replace it soon, hoping it would fix the problem. But in this case at the moment, I would like to see other options.

Speculations:

 <<-- click to expand

Other: I have tried updating the DirectX 9.0c files but that didn't seem to work. I'm pretty sure I have all of the drivers for my PC, but if there were new updates from the past year or so, then I'm definitely out of date. I might need to check up on that one. I'll update here as soon as I can.

Please someone help me!

Hello chopaface and welcome to Lockergnome!

Do you have any errors in the event logs?
Does it crash only when playing Sims 2?

Try uninstalling your drivers, restarting your PC and then install the latest ones. The 9.XX series drivers have been known to have problems so I went back to version 84.21.

Hi I was wondering if anyone had the following problem:

I have the sims 2 on my computer and it was working fine up until a couple of months ago. For some reason when I try to play a family, the universal control (the bit with, aspirations relationships and build mode etc) has completely disappeared. I have uninstalled and re-installed the sims 2 but I still have the same problem.

Does anyone know how I can fix it?

When this happens, it means that your files are corrupted and the source file that you got it from is bad data. You might need to redownload it from the main site or buy the original cd/dvd copy if you haven't already.

If you already done so, then it has to do something with your drivers. They are dominantly the main issues of problems with playing games. The games itself in dvds, installation files are not bad, unless you corrupted them yourself by accident then it's time for you to replace those files.

Often, games will appear fine in the past, it's usually with your PC that's the problem. Try updating your drivers to the latest version and scan your hardware for any problems. I know my motherboard is having some difficulties at the moment, but that'll change.. I'm planning on replacing it, soon, hopefully anyway.

May I please ask what are the event logs and how may I find them?

Yes, it crashes during my play on Sims 2, however I have not tried playing other games. But if the problem is to be my PC, the problem is most likely to be universal with the other programs, except for lesser required fields.

Anyway, I'm currently trying to find and download all of the drivers for my PC, but I am having difficulties in getting one driver for my motherboard.

Okay, it's either that you have very bad speculations of a PC.

Tell us what are your specs, you can find out by downloading PC Wizard and allow it to scan through your PC for detail information, or go look at the basics by looking at the general properties of My Computer.

If you can't even go higher than 800x600 resolution, then I'm thinking, terrible graphics, and a very small screen.

You're computer is at the minimum from supporting the game.

I do not suggest updating your drivers, this game also depends on your video card, memory, and processor.

Priority:

Video Card
Memory
Processor

Processor doesn't really do much, it helps to go things a bit faster, but the master mind of the speed is most likely to be the memory, it does everything for you, from opening files and multitasking crazy good. A good video card is a demanding product for all sorts of gamers like yourself. You require a new video card, but in order to get a newer and better video card, you need to find a compatible motherboard that has the correct socket in order for the two pieces to fit.

If the PC is old, like about 5-8 years old, then I suggest a new PC, as how those models cannot support the latest motherboards that are available presently.

If the PC is new, then it depends on the specs. Just because it's new, does not necessarily means it will do anything for you. You need to give better and descriptive information about your computer before anyone of us helps you.

Click start > click run > type eventvwr.msc > click ok > Look under system and application for items with red Xs that happened at the SAME time as your crash > double click the entries to view more details > then list any with your next post.

You can download the motherboard drivers either the ASUS website or the Nvidia website.

Hello zemble91 and welcome to Lockergnome!

As chopaface said we need your specs to be able to help you.

If you don't know then please download and run SysSpec. Run the file > click on the system button > click edit > click copy to clipboard and then paste it with your reply.
