Hello Funkeemonkey and welcome to Lockergnome!

As PuTzZ has suggested try using a different CD/DVD drive to install the game.
If that doesn't work try manually installing the game.

Hello sweetkaye27 and welcome to Lockergnome!

To manually install the game follow the instructions below.

FOR CD:

Go into My Computer.
Open drive C.
Right-click inside the window and select New, and then Folder.
Name the folder as Disk Images (it is important that the name has a space in it).
Open the disk images folder.
Right-click inside the window and select New, and then Folder.
Name this folder Disk1.
Repeat steps 6 and 7 while substituting Disk1 for Disk2 and so on until there are 4 'Disk' folders followed by a number 1 through 4. it is important to note there must not be a space between "Disk" and the number.
Insert Disk 1 of The Sims 2 into your CD-Rom drive and if the autoplay starts, cancel it.
Go into My Computer.
Right-click on your CD-ROM drive and choose Open.
When you see the contents of the disk in the Window, click on Edit at the top of the window and choose Select All.
All the contents of the disk should now be highlighted, click on Edit at the top of the window again and choose Copy.
Open the Disk1 folder you created under C:\Disk Images; click on Edit at the top of the window and choose Paste. This will copy the contents of the CD into the Disk1 folder.
Repeat steps 9 through 14 for the remaining disks until you have copied each disk into its appropriate folder.
Once all the disks have been copied, remove ALL CDs from any drives.
Open the Disk1 folder under Disk Images and double-click on autorun.exe to start the installation.
To save disk space, you can delete the Disk Images folders after the installation is complete.

FOR DVD:

Insert the DVD into the DVD-rom drive. Exit the startup menu when it comes up.
Double click My Computer, then right click on the DVD-rom drive with the game DVD in it and select Explore.
Hold the CTRL key and then hit A. That should select all the folders and files.
Then hold CTRL and hit C. This will not look like it does much, but it's preparing to copy the files.
Close that folder and go to your desktop. Right click anywhere BUT on an icon, and Select New, then Folder. Name the folder Sims2 DVD.
Then double-click that folder, and hit CTRL and V. This will begin copying the files from the DVD.
Once the files are copied, remove the disc from the drive.
Double-click on the Setup icon in the folder.
You may delete the Sims2 DVD folder once the installation is complete.

Sound like it's having trouble reading the disk/disks.

Is the disk clean and scratch free?

Another thing you can try is changing the drives transfer mode to PIO only mode. Doing that sometimes helps.

I'll try to explain it but it's not easy explaining it on a forum.

Go back into device manager > click the + sign to expand the tree on DVD/CD-ROM drives > double click your DVD drive and it should give you the location. See picture 1.

Picture 1:

The Location for the device will either be 0 or 1.

Close that window > double click Primary IDE Channel > change the transfer mode of the corresponding device.

Location 0 = device 0 and location 1 = device 1. See picture 2.

Picture 2:

If the corresponding device is greyed out check the Secondary IDE Channel.

Did you change the drives transfer mode to PIO only mode?
Do you have another DVD/CD drive you can try?

No uninstalling the drive won't work.

You could try a firmware update. You can download these updates from the manufacturers website.

I figured this was the reason i had 2 copys so i inserted the other sims disk1 and the same error came up. I suspect that my cds are just damaged and i will have to go buy yet anther copy (even though all other cds are in mint condition) Is thier any way to get around this error? If so please tell me. thx for reading

sorry if this is coming teh second time...i clicked post reply once but it never showed in the forum page!!!

hey zeus i have been following all ur posts which help everyone in sims installation...but none of the tricks ever worked for me so here i am...
like most people installation stops at around 92%(sometimes 91 or 95%) and gets hanged there...few minutes later it says "A problem occurred when trying to transfer the file D:\TSData\Res\...."..u wud have heard this a hundred times!..ok i tried the following nothing worked:
1.tried renaming "installshield" to installshieldold"
2.i tried manual installation by saving contents under Disk Images as Disk1,Disk2 so on...but Disk 4 never got copied...it says CRC error..so i could never really copy disk4 to comlpete installation process Sad
3.then i tried extracting contents of the compressed folder into my hard disk but that extraction also dint get completed and got hung in middle!!
My system has 1.40 Ghz,256 MB RAM and NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro display card....let me know if i can play with these specs...but even if teh video card is problem installation would atleast get completed rite??? and wat exactly does this PIO mode do?? i dint kno if it was safe to try it ...whether it might affect the system config? thanks a lot in advance zeus.. i know u can help Very Happy

Hello ash219 and welcome to Lockergnome!

A CRC error usually means that the disk is damaged.

I've also had a look through your specs and your TNT2 card isn't capable of running the game, so you'll need to upgrade it.

Hi,

Try changing the transfer mode of the drive to PIO only mode (see SIMS 2 FAQ sticky thread). If that doesn't work try another CD/DVD drive.
