I have a Dell laptop running Vista. When you plug somethng into the microphone jack, a popup from Sigma Tel comes up asking if this is a microphone, a line level signal, or maybe a surround channel output. You tell it, and everything works.

Well, I haven't used this feature in several months, and now it doesn't work automatically. If I go into the control panel, and click on the Sigma Tel applet, the popup comes up and works correctly. The checkmark authorizing automatic popup when something is inserted into the jack is checked.

A bit more history. Some months ago I disabled some services as suggested here and elsewhere. Everything else seems to work fine. None of the Sigma Tel or IDC services are disabled, all are automatic.

Question: what service might I have disabled that notifies Sigma Tel that something is plugged in? Or is it more likely that the Sigma Tel service is slightly broken and needs to be reinstalled?

thanks

Yes, I stupidly lost the log of what, exactly, I have disabled and when... Rolling Eyes Embarassed

Hello,

If it is not discernible which service belongs to the Sigmatel audio driver, then I would suggest downloading the latest version of the driver software from Dell's support web site, uninstalling the currently installed version and installing the freshly-downloaded version. That should give you the notification back on the audio jack.

Thanks, I was going to do that as a last resort. What concerns me is that what is disabled is not a Sigma Tel service, but some kind of Windows "notification" service that tells other services to "get going". If that is the case, reinstalling the Sigma Tel service will do nothing.

Hello,

I believe it is handled by the SigmaTel software, but even if it is not, reinstalling the drivers may reset the other components as well.
